Xiaomi’s next major foldable phone could arrive with one of the biggest memory upgrades the smartphone market has seen in years. Fresh industry chatter suggests that the upcoming Xiaomi 18 Fold may be among the first devices to use LPDDR6 RAM, paired with Xiaomi’s rumored XRING 03 chipset.

The development is especially interesting because the memory is expected to come from Chinese DRAM manufacturer CXMT, which appears to be moving quickly toward mass production of next-generation LPDDR6 chips. Reports indicate that production could begin as early as next month, giving CXMT a rare early lead over established memory giants such as Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron.

LPDDR6 RAM is expected to bring faster data transfer speeds, better power efficiency, and improved performance for demanding mobile workloads. For a premium foldable like the Xiaomi 18 Fold, this could translate into smoother multitasking, faster app switching, improved AI performance, better gaming responsiveness, and longer battery life under heavy use.

However, the most important detail may not be the technology itself, but how limited its availability could be.

According to current expectations, LPDDR6 RAM may be reserved specifically for the Xiaomi 18 Fold rather than being used across Xiaomi’s wider flagship lineup. That suggests Xiaomi and CXMT may be working on a low-volume launch rather than a large-scale rollout. The Xiaomi 18 Fold is not expected to ship in massive numbers, with estimates suggesting overall shipments may stay below 500,000 units, and possibly closer to 300,000 units.

That limited forecast points to a key challenge: producing LPDDR6 memory at scale may still be difficult for CXMT.

While CXMT appears to have made impressive progress in getting LPDDR6 ready ahead of many competitors, ramping up production is a very different challenge. Manufacturing advanced DRAM requires high precision, strong yields, and access to cutting-edge semiconductor equipment. Due to U.S. trade restrictions, CXMT reportedly has to rely on older Deep Ultraviolet equipment and more complex multi-patterning techniques. This can increase costs, slow production, and reduce yield rates.

In simpler terms, CXMT may be able to make LPDDR6 chips, but making enough of them consistently and affordably could be the bigger hurdle.

That may explain why Xiaomi is expected to use LPDDR6 only in a premium foldable model rather than a mass-market flagship. Foldable phones are already more expensive and harder to manufacture than traditional smartphones, so they naturally ship in smaller volumes. By using the Xiaomi 18 Fold as the launch platform, Xiaomi can promote a major hardware breakthrough without needing huge quantities of LPDDR6 memory from day one.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold is expected to compete in the ultra-premium foldable segment against future devices such as Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone and Samsung’s next-generation Galaxy Z Fold model. In that market, having LPDDR6 RAM could help Xiaomi stand out, especially if rivals continue using LPDDR5X for another generation.

There is also a branding advantage. If Xiaomi can claim one of the first smartphones with LPDDR6 memory, it strengthens the company’s image as an aggressive hardware innovator. Pairing LPDDR6 with the XRING 03 chipset would also give Xiaomi more control over its performance story, especially as the company continues investing in its own silicon strategy.

Still, the XRING 03 itself is not expected to be the main bottleneck. The chip is rumored to use a mature 3nm-class process, meaning Xiaomi should not face the same level of production difficulty there. The bigger limitation appears to be the LPDDR6 supply chain.

Why not simply use LPDDR5X instead? Xiaomi likely wants the 18 Fold to feel like a true next-generation flagship. A foldable phone with a high price tag needs standout features, and LPDDR6 could be one of the biggest selling points. Even if real-world gains vary depending on software optimization and workload, the marketing value of being early with LPDDR6 is significant.

For CXMT, this could be a breakthrough moment. Winning a place inside a high-end Xiaomi foldable would show that the company can compete in advanced mobile memory technology. It could also attract attention from other smartphone makers, especially those looking to reduce reliance on foreign memory suppliers.

But the larger battle is far from over. Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron still have deeper manufacturing experience, stronger global supply chains, and greater production capacity. Even if CXMT reaches LPDDR6 first in a limited commercial product, its long-term success will depend on whether it can scale production and improve yields fast enough.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold may therefore become more than just another foldable smartphone. It could be a test case for China’s growing ambitions in advanced memory manufacturing and Xiaomi’s push to differentiate its flagship devices with custom hardware and cutting-edge components.

If the reports are accurate, Xiaomi’s next foldable could deliver a major leap in mobile memory performance. But the real question is whether LPDDR6 can move beyond a limited showcase and become a mainstream smartphone feature. For now, the Xiaomi 18 Fold looks set to be one of the first major devices to answer that question.
