Devolo is preparing a 2.5GbE switch as demand for faster home and office networking grows
Devolo is getting ready to expand beyond standard Gigabit Ethernet with a new 2.5GbE switch currently in development. While the product is not expected to arrive immediately, the company has confirmed plans to enter the multigigabit networking market with support for the IEEE 802.3bz standard.
The upcoming switch is expected to support wired transfer speeds of up to 2.5 Gbit/s, making it a significant step up from Devolo’s current switch lineup. At the moment, the company offers more basic Ethernet switches with 1 Gbit/s ports, including 8-port and 16-port models aimed at users who want simple wired network expansion at an affordable price.
Interest in 2.5GbE networking has been rising steadily, especially as more households and small offices adopt faster broadband connections, Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, and Wi-Fi 7 routers, network-attached storage devices, gaming PCs, and workstations that can benefit from higher wired bandwidth. A 2.5GbE switch offers a practical upgrade path because it can deliver faster speeds over many existing Ethernet cables, depending on cable quality and network setup.
Devolo has not yet revealed the final specifications of its 2.5GbE switch. Details such as the number of ports, design, power consumption, managed or unmanaged functionality, and pricing remain unknown. It is also unclear whether the company will launch a single model or a broader range of multigigabit switches, possibly including 8-port and 16-port versions similar to its current Gigabit Ethernet products.
The release is currently expected sometime in 2027, although a more precise launch window has not been announced.
The planned 2.5GbE switch would fit neatly alongside Devolo’s upcoming BE9300 mesh router system. The BE9300 series is scheduled to arrive before the end of the year and is designed as a high-performance mesh Wi-Fi solution. Each unit includes a 2.5GbE RJ45 port that can be used for either LAN or WAN connections, giving users more flexibility when building a faster home network.
The BE9300 mesh routers will be sold as single units as well as in two-pack and three-pack bundles. Users will also be able to expand their mesh network with additional units. Devolo has confirmed support for at least five units, with the possibility that even larger setups may work as well.
With a 2.5GbE switch and Wi-Fi 7-ready mesh hardware, Devolo appears to be positioning itself for the next phase of home networking. As internet speeds increase and more devices rely on high-bandwidth connections, multigigabit Ethernet is becoming less of a luxury and more of a practical upgrade for power users, gamers, content creators, and small businesses.
Although buyers will have to wait until 2027 for Devolo’s 2.5GbE switch, its development signals that the company is preparing to compete in a faster and increasingly important segment of the networking market.
