One adventurous PC enthusiast pushed an ASUS ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090 to the edge, and it ended with a melted connector on his power monitoring device. Now, well-known German overclocker Der8auer has stepped in with an unexpected response: he’s gifting the user a brand-new Wireview Pro 2 to replace the damaged unit.
The incident started after the user heavily modified his RTX 5090 setup to chase higher performance. Reports indicate he performed a shunt mod on the ROG Astral RTX 5090 and flashed a 1000W BIOS from an MSI RTX 5090 Lightning Z to raise the GPU’s power limit. With that much additional power on tap, the Wireview Pro began reporting high temperature warnings. The problem is those warnings were ignored, and the extra heat eventually caused the Wireview Pro connector to melt, damaging the cable in the process.
The good news is the damage appears limited. The graphics card and power supply unit were not affected, which could have made this a far more expensive and dangerous situation. Still, losing the Wireview Pro is inconvenient for anyone who relies on it to keep an eye on real-time metrics such as power draw and connector temperatures—especially on a high-end GPU where 16-pin power safety has become a serious topic.
That’s where Der8auer comes in. He has been closely investigating 16-pin connector melting issues for a long time, and after hearing about the situation, he contacted the user and asked for shipping details. Interestingly, he also praised the user’s commitment and effort to maximize performance, even though the overheating warning was ignored. Rather than simply criticizing the risky setup, he decided to send the latest model, Wireview Pro 2.
Wireview Pro 2 is positioned as a bigger step forward compared to the original Wireview Pro. It adds more protective features designed specifically to reduce the chance of connector overheating and melting. One of the standout upgrades is an active cooling fan intended to keep temperatures under control continuously. It also introduces additional safety and control features, including the ability to automatically shut down the system if the power limit is exceeded—an important safeguard for extreme overclocking and high-wattage BIOS configurations.
This improved protection and added functionality come at a higher price. Wireview Pro 2 reportedly costs around $140, making it notably more expensive than the original version.
In this case, the user got lucky: no catastrophic GPU or PSU damage, and a clear path forward by swapping to Wireview Pro 2 for better monitoring and safety. However, it’s worth noting that no accessory can guarantee absolute protection if a GPU is pushed far beyond safe operating limits. Even so, Wireview Pro 2 is shaping up as one of the most practical tools available for anyone running an RTX 5090-class graphics card and wanting an extra layer of defense against 16-pin connector overheating—especially in high-power, high-performance setups.
