The solar industry is steadily stepping into the future with an exciting new trend: the use of robots to enhance the construction of solar farms. Forward-thinking companies like Planted Solar, which has secured a $20 million investment from Bill Gates, are at the forefront of developing robotic technology that can streamline tasks ranging from ground preparation to module installation.
This robotic revolution is spurred by challenges faced in the solar sector such as rising interest rates and stricter financing, which have led to numerous company bankruptcies in sunny Californian regions this year, as reported by Solar Insure, a U.S. solar installation insurance provider.
Start-ups see automation through robotics as a game-changer for improving operational efficiency. These devices not only outpace human workers in speed and precision but also significantly cut construction times. For instance, AES has noted that its robots can double the construction speed while slashing costs by half. Eric Brown, managing director of Planted Solar, claims their tech can reduce building time by two-thirds.
Moreover, robotic assistance is expected to decrease the spatial footprint of solar plants by 60% and reduce labor demands, key factors in an industry facing a notable workforce shortage. Evan Riley, Managing Partner of White Pine Renewables, emphasizes, “We want to automate to save money. The labor shortage will just force it faster.”
However, the road to fully robotic solar farm construction is not without its bumps. The high costs of robot acquisition and operation, along with the need for broader acceptance in the construction industry, present significant hurdles. There’s also a demand for a standardized regulatory framework governing the use of robots in construction.
Currently, robots lack the ability to perform certain tasks, such as handling heavy steel beams, or working efficiently on rocky terrain. Adapting to varied terrain and complex construction plans presents additional challenges, making automation in solar farm construction still somewhat niche.
As Noah Ready-Campbell, CEO of Built Robotics, notes, “It’s off the charts compared to other markets in terms of the scale, the repetitiveness of the work, and the appetite from customers.” While automation is still emerging, the future looks bright for robotic contributions to solar farm construction.
