ChatGPT is making waves as it nears 700 million weekly active users, showcasing its explosive growth as a consumer app. This milestone follows a previous achievement of 500 million weekly active users back in March, according to Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP and the lead of ChatGPT’s app. Turley noted that the app’s user base has expanded fourfold in just a year.
He expressed his gratitude to the team, highlighting how ChatGPT is increasingly becoming an essential tool for learning, creativity, and problem-solving. The app’s rise in popularity received an extra boost after OpenAI launched a revamped image generation feature in March, powered by the powerful GPT-4 model. By early April, Brad Lightcap, the company’s COO, reported that over 130 million users had generated more than 700 million images within just a few days of this release.
Subscription numbers for ChatGPT have also seen significant growth. Last week, Lightcap shared that the app had reached 5 million paying business users, increasing from 3 million subscribers in June.
A recent report by market intelligence firm Sensor Tower highlighted that ChatGPT users are highly engaged, using the app over 12 days a month on average, ranking just behind Google and X. Additionally, in the first half of 2025, users reportedly spent an average of 16 minutes daily on the app.
This surge in user engagement and functionality showcases ChatGPT’s evolving role as a pivotal AI application in both personal and professional settings.
