SK Hynix Reveals Plans For Cutting-Edge HBM4E Memory, Development Expected By 2026 1

SK Hynix Boosting HBM4 Prices by 70% Amid Market Dominance and Premium Early Delivery Options

SK Hynix is making waves as it prepares to offer its advanced HBM4 memory technology to NVIDIA, commanding a premium price. As one of the pioneers in producing this cutting-edge memory, SK Hynix is positioned to cater to the burgeoning AI industry with its innovative solutions.

The heightened cost of HBM4 can be attributed to its use of TSMC’s 4nm process and the advantage of being the first to supply this technology. This move is set to drive a new phase in the AI sector, with HBM4 becoming essential for next-generation AI computing hardware. By integrating logic and semiconductors into a single package, SK Hynix plans to increase HBM4 prices by up to 70% compared to its predecessor, the HBM3E.

Reports from the industry suggest that in early 2023, SK Hynix secured a unit price around $500 for its HBM4 12-layer products from NVIDIA. This is significantly higher than the $300 price for equivalent HBM3E products. Being a front-runner in supplying HBM4 to NVIDIA has given SK Hynix a competitive edge over rivals like Samsung and Micron. The company’s exclusive supply of 12-Hi HBM3E stacks for NVIDIA’s Blackwell Ultra series further strengthens its position, allowing it to negotiate favorable terms.

While SK Hynix enjoys its current dominance, the premium pricing opens the door for competitors like Samsung and Micron to challenge its market share. Samsung, in particular, has been making significant strides with its 1c DRAM technology and, with its own semiconductor capabilities, could potentially break into NVIDIA’s supply chain with competitive HBM4 solutions. The battle for supremacy in the HBM4 market promises to become more intense as these industry giants vie for leadership.
