China-based automaker BYD has recently expanded its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of the e2 Glory Edition. This new electric hatchback comes to market with a competitive starting price of 89,800 yuan (~$12,500), which is slightly more budget-friendly than the 2023 e2 EV models that were previously available for a starting price of 102,800 yuan (~$14,300).
The e2 Glory Edition is a family hatchback based on BYD’s advanced e-Platform 3.0. It features a 70 kW electric motor that can produce up to 180 Nm of torque, paired with a sizable 43.2 kWh battery pack. This configuration promises a commendable range of 405 km (~250 miles) on a single charge according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), positioning the hatchback as a suitable option for everyday commuting.
One of the standout attributes of the e2 Glory Edition is its Vehicle to Load (VtoL) capability, which enables owners to use the car’s battery to power external devices with an output of up to 3.3 kW, significantly augmenting its practicality during power outages or outdoor activities.
The standard e2 Glory Edition comes equipped with a variety of modern conveniences such a smartphone NFC key feature for effortless access and security, a reversing camera to aid with parking, and a 10.1-inch rotating infotainment screen that enhances the cabin’s tech appeal. The Luxury variant further enhances the experience with a larger 12.8-inch infotainment display and other premium upgrades, available at 96,800 yuan (~$13,500).
Embracing BYD’s Ocean series aesthetic that started with the original e2 introduced in 2019, the e2 Glory Edition continues the brand’s journey toward offering environmentally-friendly vehicles at more accessible price points. This strategy aligns with the wider industry trend of increasing electric vehicle uptake through competitive pricing and value propositions.
The release of the e2 Glory Edition, also referred to as the e2 Honor Edition in some reports, has been part of BYD’s push to widen its foothold in the electric vehicle sector. Interestingly, the company’s aggressive pricing tactics have not gone unnoticed globally, as it spurred discussions among US legislators concerning the potential need for increased import tariffs on electric vehicles manufactured by Chinese companies.
