BYD has launched its eighth ocean-going car carrier, pushing its annual export potential beyond one million vehicles as it ramps up global deliveries of electric cars. Announced on Weibo, the newest vessel, BYD Jinan, follows the company’s tradition of naming ships after cities in China’s eastern Shandong province, where BYD maintains a strong manufacturing presence.
While BYD did not disclose the specific capacity of BYD Jinan, the automaker confirmed that its expanded fleet can now move more than one million vehicles per year. Three of its ships are capable of carrying nearly 10,000 vehicles each, and most of the remaining vessels can accommodate about 7,000 vehicles per voyage. BYD added that this commissioning may be the last for a while, with no immediate plans for further fleet expansion.
The car-shipping lineup now includes:
– BYD Explorer No. 1
– BYD Hefei
– BYD Changzhou
– BYD Shenzhen, which completed its maiden voyage in April
– BYD Xi’an
– BYD Changsha
– BYD Zhengzhou
– BYD Jinan
The beefed-up maritime logistics come amid a surge in sales and exports. BYD sold 373,626 vehicles in August, up 8.52% from July. Exports topped 80,000 units that month, more than double the same period last year. Year-to-date in 2025, the company has shipped 625,816 vehicles overseas, representing a 136.27% increase year over year.
By expanding control over its ocean transport, BYD is strengthening its ability to deliver EVs reliably to overseas markets, reduce bottlenecks, and keep pace with rising global demand. With export capacity now topping seven figures annually and a busy schedule of international shipments, the company is positioning its logistics to match its rapid sales growth.
