MSI has taken the lead in rolling out Intel’s latest microcode update, 0x116, for several of its LGA 181 motherboards. This update aims to enhance the reliability of CPUs, particularly for certain MSI Z890 and B860 models. Intel, which has been consistently releasing BIOS updates, seems to be on a mission to rectify past performance issues and deliver on its performance promises.
This time around, Intel’s efforts have resulted in a new patch, which MSI has integrated into a fresh BIOS update. When we checked, we found that many Z890 and B860 chipset motherboards now support an update to this new BIOS.
For those unfamiliar, these microcode patches, like the newly released 0x116, aim to boost the gaming performance of desktop Core Ultra Series 2, also known as Core Ultra 200S processors. Despite earlier attempts, like the Microcode 0x114 from December 2024, Intel hasn’t quite hit the mark in terms of gaming performance. This new update is yet another step in the ongoing process to achieve the coveted ‘promised’ performance level.
According to MSI’s release notes, the Microcode 0x116 update is part of the latest BIOS, which users of MSI Z890 and B860 motherboards can adopt. The specific benefits of the update remain somewhat mysterious, but it is said to enhance CPU reliability for certain non-K Intel Core Ultra 200S processors. Additionally, it promises improved memory compatibility and potentially better overclocking capabilities.
Currently, not all models within the MSI Z890 and B860 lines can receive this update, but about half are eligible. The update is undergoing further testing to determine the exact changes and improvements it brings. While it’s unlikely to significantly alter gaming or raw performance, it’s a waiting game to see the eventual impact.
