In an effort to ensure environmental safety and sustainability, the Kumamoto Prefectural Government has taken proactive measures following the launch of mass production at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) subsidiary, JASM’s, first wafer fabrication plant. This plant began its operations towards the end of 2024, marking a significant milestone in technological advancement.
To assess the environmental impact of this new production facility, the government began sampling river and groundwater in January 2025. This environmental monitoring aims to gauge any potential effects on the local ecosystem, particularly with respect to water quality, following the plant’s operational commencement.
This initiative highlights the importance of balancing technological progress with environmental responsibility. Such actions are crucial in ensuring that while industries and economies benefit from advancements in semiconductor manufacturing, natural resources and ecosystems remain protected for future generations.
Furthermore, similar environmental evaluations are planned for Rapidus, another key player in the semiconductor industry, which is in the process of constructing its inaugural plant in Hokkaido. This consistency across different regions underscores a broader commitment to sustainable industrial practices in the rapidly growing field of semiconductor manufacturing.
