Bit of War Brings Kratos Back in a Free NES-Style 8-Bit Demake of His Greek Adventure

Bit of War puts a fresh retro spin on God of War by delivering an 8-bit “demake” that feels like a throwback to classic action games, while still capturing Kratos’ trademark rage. Instead of simply recreating the original adventure in pixel form, this fan-made project takes a more interesting route: it explores an alternate storyline inspired by older interviews with God of War creator David Jaffe, imagining a different ending for Kratos.

Even with the limitations of an 8-bit style, the game keeps the core spirit of Kratos intact. The vengeance is still there, but the presentation is naturally less graphic, leaning into old-school game design rather than modern spectacle. The developers have also made it clear that Bit of War is a not-for-profit fan project, created with permission to use Kratos’ likeness. They describe it as a love letter not only to the God of War series, but also to retro gaming as a whole.

Where the mainline God of War games are known for cinematic set pieces, big-budget visuals, and over-the-top combat, Bit of War stands out by embracing simplicity. Expect pixelated visuals, clipart-like backgrounds, and a tighter gameplay focus aimed at precision. Blocking and platforming feel more deliberate, giving the experience a different rhythm from the fast, flashy chaos many players associate with the franchise today.

That said, the enemy variety doesn’t reach the same iconic level as the official titles. You’ll mainly fight familiar, more generic foes like mummies, soldiers, archers, and berserkers. The payoff comes as you progress, thanks to upgrades that add new layers to combat. One standout is Euryale, an upgrade that can turn enemies into stone and unleash wind blasts, helping the game avoid feeling too one-note as the difficulty ramps up.

Bit of War is already drawing plenty of attention in the retro and indie gaming community, with more than 39,000 downloads reported on IndieDB, and it’s also available on Itch.io. If you’ve finished the main God of War franchise—or you’re coming down from the epic scale of God of War Ragnarok—this 8-bit demake offers a fun, bite-sized way to revisit Kratos in a totally different format, blending nostalgia with an intriguing “what if” take on his story.
