God of War Laufey Release Date Rumored for Early 2027 as PS5 Fans Await Sony’s Next Big Exclusive
Sony’s next major God of War game may arrive sooner than many fans expected. While the company has not officially announced a release date for God of War Laufey, fresh insider claims suggest the highly anticipated PS5 exclusive could launch in the first half of 2027.
The rumored timeline gained more attention after Sony’s State of Play 2026 presentation, where Santa Monica Studio’s upcoming project received an extended showcase. The footage reportedly looked polished and far along in development, giving fans hope that the game is not several years away.
The new God of War entry is expected to shift the spotlight away from Kratos and focus instead on Faye, also known as Laufey. This would mark a major narrative change for the long-running action-adventure franchise, which has traditionally centered on Kratos and, more recently, his relationship with Atreus.
Insider NateTheHate previously claimed in March 2026 that the next God of War game would follow Laufey rather than Kratos. He also suggested the gameplay would lean more heavily into action compared with recent mainline entries such as God of War Ragnarök. Those details appeared to line up with what Sony later showed during the roughly 20-minute State of Play segment.
Following the presentation, NateTheHate doubled down on the possibility of a God of War Laufey release date in the first half of 2027. Another well-known industry reporter, Jason Schreier, also pushed back against speculation that the game might slip to 2028, indicating that fans likely will not have to wait that long.
If the early 2027 window proves accurate, it would suggest that the project has already been in development for several years. Reports and industry chatter indicate the game may have been in production for around five to six years. That would fit within the broader release pattern of the God of War series, which saw God of War Ascension launch in 2013, followed by the 2018 reboot, and then God of War Ragnarök in 2022.
For PlayStation players, the timing would be significant. Many fans have been eager for more major first-party PS5 exclusives, especially as modern AAA game development cycles continue to grow longer and more expensive. A new God of War title arriving in 2027 would give Sony one of its strongest system-selling releases of the generation.
Still, God of War Laufey already appears to be a divisive project. Some players are excited to explore Faye’s backstory and experience a fresh perspective within the franchise’s Norse mythology. Others are more hesitant, arguing that God of War should remain centered on Kratos, whose journey has defined the series for nearly two decades.
Series creator David Jaffe has also been critical of the new direction, suggesting that the game may feel too different from earlier God of War entries. That reaction reflects a wider debate among fans: should the franchise continue evolving with new protagonists and gameplay ideas, or should it stay closer to the formula that made it famous?
For now, Sony has not confirmed the official God of War Laufey release date. However, with multiple reliable voices pointing toward a first-half 2027 launch and the State of Play footage looking more advanced than expected, the next chapter in the God of War saga may be closer than many anticipated.
