Shokz OpenDots Air Bring OpenDots 2 Features at a Friendlier Price

Shokz OpenDots Air Launch as a Cheaper Open-Ear Earbuds Option With Bluetooth 6.1 and Smart Ear Detection

Shokz has expanded its open-ear earbuds lineup with the OpenDots Air, a more affordable model designed for users who want the comfort and awareness of clip-on earbuds without paying for the higher-end OpenDots 2.

The Shokz OpenDots Air arrive as the lowest-priced option in the OpenDots series, but they still carry several useful features found in more expensive models. These include Bluetooth 6.1, Dynamic Ear Detection, fast charging, customizable sound settings, and AI-assisted call noise reduction.

Like the OpenDots 2 and OpenDots One, the OpenDots Air use an open-ear clip-on design. This style keeps the ear canal uncovered, allowing users to listen to music, podcasts, and calls while staying aware of their surroundings. It is a practical choice for commuting, walking, working in an office, or exercising outdoors.

The design is slightly different from the OpenDots One and OpenDots 2, but Shokz has kept its flexible nickel-titanium JointArc structure. This helps the earbuds adjust to different ear shapes for a more secure and comfortable fit. Each earbud weighs just 6.3 grams, making them light enough for long listening sessions.

The OpenDots Air also come with an IP55 rating for dust and water resistance, which is better than the IP54 rating found on the OpenDots One. This means they should handle sweat and light splashes well, making them suitable for workouts and everyday use. However, the charging case does not have an official water or dust resistance rating.

For sound, the Shokz OpenDots Air feature Bassphere technology, the same audio system used in the OpenDots One. They do not include the newer Bassphere 2.0 technology found on the OpenDots 2, but they still offer custom 11.8 mm dual drivers aimed at delivering fuller sound from an open-ear design.

Users get four preset EQ modes, along with two customizable EQ profiles. This gives listeners more control over how the earbuds sound, whether they prefer stronger bass, clearer vocals, or a more balanced profile.

One of the most convenient features is Dynamic Ear Detection Technology. With this system, users do not need to worry about which earbud goes on the left or right ear. The earbuds can automatically detect how they are being worn. They can also pause music when removed and resume playback when placed back on the ear.

For calls, each earbud includes dual microphones. Shokz uses AI-powered noise reduction to help improve voice clarity by reducing background noise during phone calls or online meetings. This should make the OpenDots Air useful not only for music but also for work calls, video chats, and daily communication.

The control system combines touch controls with a force pinch sensor. Users can tap the earbuds to control playback or answer and reject calls. Pinching can be used to adjust volume, skip tracks, or reject incoming calls. This gives the earbuds a more flexible control setup than basic touch-only designs.

Battery life is rated at up to 9 hours on a single charge, with the charging case extending total use to 36 hours. That is slightly lower than the more expensive OpenDots models, mainly due to the smaller battery. The case also does not support Qi wireless charging.

Fast charging is included, though. A quick 10-minute charge provides up to 2 hours of listening time, which is useful when you need a quick battery boost before leaving home.

The OpenDots Air support Bluetooth 6.1 and Bluetooth Multipoint, allowing users to connect to two devices at the same time. This makes it easier to switch between a phone and laptop without repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting. The earbuds also work with the Shokz app for settings and customization.

The Shokz OpenDots Air are priced at $129.95 and are available in Daybreak Purple and Black. With their lower price, open-ear comfort, smart wearing detection, strong battery life, and modern connectivity, they offer a compelling alternative for buyers who want Shokz open-ear earbuds without stepping up to the more premium OpenDots 2.
