Australia has officially become the first country to roll out a nationwide social media ban for children and teens under 16, setting a new global benchmark for how governments may regulate online platforms in the name of youth safety. The policy is now being enforced by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner and targets ten of the world’s most-used social networks: Facebook, Instagram, Kick, Reddit, TikTok, Snapchat, X, Threads, and YouTube.
Under this new law, the responsibility shifts heavily onto the platforms themselves. Each service on the list must take “reasonable steps” to stop underage users from accessing or using their platforms. Companies that fail to comply could face penalties of up to AU$49.5 million (around $33 million USD), making it one of the toughest enforcement frameworks aimed at teen social media access anywhere in the world.
