ASUS Unveils ROG Equalizer 12V-2×6 Cable Designed to Prevent GPU Connector Meltdowns

More hardware makers are stepping in to address one of the most talked-about problems in modern PC building: overheated and, in worst cases, melted 16-pin GPU power connectors. ASUS is the latest to introduce a new approach, and it targets the issue in a different place than many previous fixes—inside the cable itself, rather than relying on changes to the power supply or graphics card.

ASUS has announced the ROG Equalizer, an ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1-compliant 12V-2×6 power cable designed to reduce the risk of overheating by improving how electrical load is shared across the connector’s pins. The idea is simple: when current isn’t distributed evenly, certain pins and wires can end up carrying more power than intended, increasing heat and raising the chance of damage. This concern has made some buyers hesitant about high-end GPUs, while others who already own them frequently check connections for peace of mind.

What makes the ASUS ROG Equalizer different is its emphasis on balancing the load before the power reaches the graphics card. ASUS is positioning it as a premium 12V-2×6 cable with a higher load capacity, supporting up to 17A per cable compared with 9.2A on typical implementations. Uneven current distribution is often linked to imperfect contact or partially connected pins, where fewer pins end up carrying more of the total load. ASUS claims its cable design can help keep temperatures under control even under problematic conditions. In cited testing, the ROG Equalizer reportedly held around 73.4°C even with four middle wires removed—an extreme scenario that ASUS says would normally trigger temperatures climbing by as much as 146°C.

ASUS hasn’t fully detailed the internal engineering, but the cable appears intended to equalize resistance across conductors so power sharing remains more consistent. In practical terms, this is meant to reduce hotspots that can form when the load “chooses” an easier path through certain wires or pins. The goal is safer, more stable power delivery for demanding graphics cards that draw significant wattage through the 12V-2×6 connector.

In terms of build and usability, the ROG Equalizer uses a dual-color design commonly seen on DIY-style 12V-2×6 cables, includes multiple cable combs for cleaner routing, and features fully braided wiring for a more premium finish—details that matter to builders focused on airflow, cable management, and long-term durability.

Availability will initially be tied to new ASUS power supplies, with the ROG Equalizer bundled with 2026 ASUS ROG Thor III and ROG Strix Platinum PSU models. ASUS also notes that the cable is compatible with other ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1-compliant power supplies from major manufacturers, which could make it attractive to users who want an upgraded 12V-2×6 cable solution without replacing their entire PSU. Pricing has not been announced yet.

For PC enthusiasts watching the 16-pin connector situation closely, ASUS’s ROG Equalizer cable is another sign that manufacturers are taking additional steps to improve real-world reliability—especially for builders running high-power GPUs who want extra reassurance that their connector and cabling can handle the load safely.
