The concept of an iPhone with a completely bezel-free design has captured the imagination of tech enthusiasts for some time. Initially slated for release in 2026, this futuristic iPhone, likely the iPhone 18, faces potential delays due to ongoing technical challenges.
Apple has long been on a quest to minimize bezels on its devices, making notable progress with the iPhone 16 Pro, known for having some of the thinnest borders in the industry. However, realizing a truly bezel-free phone is proving to be more complicated than initially anticipated.
The hurdle lies in the development of the bezel-free display technology that Apple is working on with major screen suppliers, Samsung and LG. According to industry insiders, the collaborative effort to bring this revolutionary screen to life has encountered significant obstacles, leading to the possibility of a delayed launch beyond 2026.
Unlike Samsung’s older Galaxy models with curved edges, Apple intends to avoid the “magnifying glass effect” associated with such designs. Similarly, Xiaomi’s “quad-curved waterfall display” experiences this effect. Apple plans to opt for a flat screen with clean, angular sides that extend effortlessly over the edges—a design reminiscent of the sleek look of the Apple Watch.
Insiders describe Apple’s vision for a bezel-less iPhone as “pebble-like,” but achieving this seamless look hinges on overcoming several technical hurdles. Samsung and LG must integrate two advanced technologies: Thin Film Encapsulation to protect OLED panels and Optical Clear Adhesive (OCA) to bond around the curved edges without allowing distortions, particularly when viewed from the side.
Moreover, these technologies must account for the positioning of the iPhone’s antennas, further complicating the development process. The current form of OCA could potentially allow for side-view distortions, a looming concern for the device’s durability.
While Apple is keen on finalizing its design statistics, the path forward is uncertain. The anticipated production start of the iPhone 18 was originally targeted for 2026. Nevertheless, as development hurdles remain, the idea of a bezel-free iPhone—a dream akin to a “single slab of glass”—may need to wait a few more years before becoming a reality. While it’s a pause, not a full stop, the tech community eagerly awaits future developments.
