In a significant shift, Apple has reportedly suspended the development of its high-end Vision Pro 2 headset. Amidst disappointing demand for its expensive first-generation wearable, the tech giant is channeling its focus towards a new, more cost-effective model anticipated to debut in late 2025.
The original Apple Vision Pro was an ambitious project, launching in eight countries with a hefty price tag of $3,499. The product line was expected to feature both a standard and a premium version. However, the steep cost of the headset seems to have deterred customers, prompting the company to rethink its strategy.
According to a published report by The Information, Apple has communicated to suppliers that it will pause its work on the elite head-mounted device, opting instead to prioritize the development of a budget-friendly alternative. This pivot appears to be aimed at tapping into the nascent market of wearable technology that may require more time to flourish.
Initial shipment estimates by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had touted the first-generation Vision Pro’s success, with expected figures between 800,000 and 850,000 units. However, these projections took a plunge, plummeting to just 450,000 units forecasted for 2024, indicating a lukewarm market response.
As a result, questions about the viability of a second-generation Vision Pro have arisen, particularly in light of the struggles faced by its predecessor. These issues have been compounded by the challenge of cutting costs for the premium headset, which was rumored to launch by the end of 2026.
The lower-cost vision headset from Apple is speculated to be priced between $1,500 and $2,500, an attempt to appeal to a broader market. Nevertheless, to achieve such price points, this version may have to compromise on several features, potentially downgrading aspects like camera quality, display resolution, and swapping a powerful Mac chipset for one derived from the iPhone lineup.
