A 2004 Liquid Cooler Was Tested on the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and the Results Are Surprisingly Impressive
A liquid cooler from the early 2000s has been put to the test on one of today’s fastest gaming CPUs, and the outcome is far more interesting than many PC enthusiasts might expect.
German overclocker and hardware enthusiast Der8auer recently experimented with the Q-Tec KS70, a liquid cooler released back in 2004 for processors such as the AMD Athlon and Intel Pentium 4. At the time, it was designed to give PC builders an easier way to push their CPUs further, especially when overclocking was becoming a major part of enthusiast culture.
Fast-forward to today, and CPU cooling has changed dramatically. Modern AIO liquid coolers are more compact, more efficient, and designed for processors that can pull far more power than chips from two decades ago. That made the test especially fascinating: could a 20-year-old liquid cooler handle a modern high-end gaming processor like the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D?
To make the experiment possible, Der8auer created a custom 3D-printed mounting solution for the AM5 platform. This allowed the old copper CPU block from the Q-Tec KS70 to be installed on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
The cooler itself is a very unusual piece of hardware by modern standards. It uses a large CPU block with a dedicated water chamber, dual fans, silicone tubing, and an aluminum radiator. Its size and layout look completely different from today’s sleek liquid coolers. In fact, the radiator was originally designed to fit inside a 5.25-inch drive bay, a feature that was common in older PC cases but is almost impossible to find in most modern gaming cases.
Because modern cases typically no longer include 5.25-inch bays, Der8auer tested the Q-Tec KS70 with the cooling unit positioned outside the case. This gave the retro cooler a better chance to perform without being restricted by poor airflow or limited internal space.
In gaming tests, the old liquid cooler performed surprisingly well. The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D was not under full load during gameplay, with CPU usage often staying below 30%. Under these conditions, the processor maintained a clock speed of around 5.2 GHz while temperatures hovered near 60°C.
For a liquid cooler released in 2004, that is an impressive result. It shows that older cooling hardware, when adapted properly, can still manage modern gaming workloads if the CPU is not constantly pushed to its maximum limits.
However, the story changed once heavier CPU workloads were introduced. During demanding stress tests such as Cinebench R23, the Q-Tec KS70 began to struggle. With the Ryzen 7 9800X3D running at 100% load, the processor held close to 5.0 GHz but quickly reached around 95°C.
That temperature is much higher than what users would expect from a modern liquid cooler. While the Q-Tec KS70 could keep the CPU running, it was clearly operating at its limit under sustained heavy loads. For rendering, benchmarking, productivity tasks, or any workload that fully loads the processor for long periods, the old cooler is not a practical choice.
Airflow would also be a major concern if the cooler were installed as originally intended inside a case with a 5.25-inch bay. Since the radiator depends on that bay placement, limited clearance and restricted airflow could make temperatures even worse compared to the open-air setup used in the test.
Still, the experiment highlights just how advanced the Q-Tec KS70 was for its time. Back when it was cooling Athlon and Pentium 4 processors, it was likely far more powerful than most users needed. Its ability to handle modern gaming on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, even with limitations, proves that some early liquid cooling designs were built with impressive headroom.
The test also serves as a reminder of how much PC hardware has evolved. A cooler that once represented enthusiast-grade innovation now looks massive and unconventional compared to today’s compact AIO solutions. Yet, with a custom mount and some creativity, it still managed to cool one of the best gaming processors currently available.
For retro PC fans, overclocking enthusiasts, and hardware collectors, the Q-Tec KS70 remains a fascinating piece of cooling history. It may not replace a modern AM5 liquid cooler, but seeing it run on a Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a remarkable example of old-school engineering meeting modern gaming performance.
