Exciting developments are unfolding in the world of AMD chipsets, particularly concerning the 800 series motherboards for the AM5 platform. Recent sightings on the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) website have sparked discussions about several AMD 800 chipset motherboards, including the mysterious B850E models. However, the listing for these has since been pulled, leaving their future uncertain.
The buzz around the B850E chipset began after a leaker, who closely monitors tech developments, shared a revealing screenshot of three different EEC registration pages. Although Intel’s upcoming 800-chipset motherboards appear as expected, AMD’s B850E models had made a sudden appearance. Among those were two specific motherboards by ASUS: the ROG Strix B850E-F Gaming WiFi and the ROG Strix B850E-I Gaming WiFi.
The leak has prompted speculation as the B850E label was previously unheard of, and it appears that AMD might have halted plans for this chipset. Another insider suggests that AMD initially considered the B850E, but subsequently decided to scrap it. This move aligns with AMD’s focus on promoting their existing lineup, considering the characteristics of the X870 and X870E chipsets, which already support Gen 5 features for GPUs and NVMe ports.
Interestingly, the primary difference between what the B850 and B850E could offer appears to reside in GPU support. The B850 is designed with Gen 5.0 compatibility solely for NVMe SSDs, while the theorized B850E would potentially extend this to GPU interfaces. Given the current state of GPU technology, which doesn’t yet fully leverage a Gen 5.0 interface, AMD might have deemed the cost-benefit imbalance too significant to warrant chasing further development on the B850E.
As AMD tailors its chipset offerings, the B840 chipset looks to accommodate PCI-E 3.0 standards for both PCI-E x16 and M.2 slots, catering to users whose needs align with the previous generation of PCIe technology. AMD enthusiasts and potential buyers are eagerly awaiting the official release of the 800-series motherboards, curious to see how AMD’s strategic decisions will unfold in the marketplace.
Stay tuned to tech news outlets for updates on these developments as AMD continues to map out its strategic steps for the AM5 platform landscape.
