AMD is gearing up to launch a quartet of GPUs within its Navi 48 and Navi 44-powered RDNA 4 “Radeon RX 8000” series, aimed at captivating the mainstream gaming audience. Recent announcements indicate that the company is pivoting away from the high-end, enthusiast market to focus on mainstream gamers, a strategy reminiscent of its earlier efforts with the Polaris and first-gen RDNA product lines. Despite the RX 7000 series’ lukewarm reception, AMD remains committed to courting the broader, more populous segment of the market.
For their RDNA 4 GPU lineup, AMD has devised two main chips: the larger Navi 48 and the smaller Navi 44. Both will incorporate GDDR6 memory with transfer speeds reaching up to 20 Gbps. Detailed reports suggest there will be four specific SKUs within this lineup:
1. Navi 48 SKU #1 – R24D-E8
2. Navi 48 SKU #2 – R24D-E6
3. Navi 44 SKU #1 – R25D-P8
4. Navi 44 SKU #2 – R25D-P4
While specific specifications for these SKUs remain under wraps, it’s clear that AMD’s AIB partners have already begun testing initial samples in their labs. The first public unveiling of these products is anticipated at CES 2025, with a full market launch expected in the first quarter of the same year.
The competitive landscape will be particularly crucial for AMD. The company will face head-to-head competition with Intel’s Arc Battlemage GPUs targeting a similar consumer base, and NVIDIA’s Blackwell “RTX 50” series aimed at enthusiasts. To stay competitive, NVIDIA might need to accelerate the release of its mid-range RTX 50 offerings or consider price reductions on current models.
Here’s a snapshot of AMD’s generational GPU lineup:
– Radeon RX 5000: RDNA 1, 7nm
– Radeon RX 6000: RDNA 2, 7nm
– Radeon RX 7000: RDNA 3 / RDNA 2, 5nm/6nm
– Radeon RX 8000: RDNA 4, 5nm/3nm?
The flagship GPUs have evolved significantly, beginning with the Navi 21’s 5120 Stream Processors (SPs) in the RX 6000 series and moving to the Navi 31’s 6144 SPs in the RX 7000 lineup. Entry-tier and mid-tier solutions have also continually advanced, with the Navi 44 expected to feature two Shader Engines (SEs).
As 2025 approaches, anticipation builds not only for AMD’s new GPU offerings but also for how these will reshape the graphics card market amidst heightened competition. Gamers and industry watchers alike are eager to see if AMD’s new direction will effectively capture the mainstream gaming crowd.
