AMD Radeon 890M Doubles FPS Performance with AFMF 2

AMD has recently introduced the technical preview of their groundbreaking AFMF 2 for the Strix Point lineup, providing the new Zen 5 chips with support for the latest frame generation technology paired with AMD’s innovative Variable Graphics Memory (VGM). This new feature, dubbed Fluid Motion Frames 2, promises to enhance the gaming experience significantly. To put this to the test, ETA Prime has evaluated it with the new Asus ProArt P16 laptop, equipped with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and the top-tier RDNA 3.5 integrated GPU, the Radeon 890M.

In ETA Prime’s experiment, 4 GB of memory was allocated to the integrated graphics. The Fluid Motion Frames technology, along with VGM, which dynamically allocates memory to the iGPU based on the selected mode, was a highlight. By setting the Search Mode to “Standard” and Performance Mode to “Performance,” ETA Prime tested several games to measure the impact of AFMF 2.

The first test was conducted with Forza Horizon 5 running at 1200p and medium visual settings. Without AFMF 2, the game averaged 86 FPS. However, when Fluid Motion Frames 2 was enabled, the performance soared to an impressive 136 FPS on average. Next up was Elden Ring, tested at 1080p with medium graphics settings. The game initially averaged around 45 FPS, but with AFMF 2 activated, the average frame rate almost doubled to about 85 FPS.

Further tests included Fallout 4 at 1600p with ultra settings. The game ran at an average of 54 FPS without the frame generation technology. Once AFMF 2 was switched on, the average frame rate rose to approximately 84 FPS. ETA Prime noted that all these tests were conducted at 45W TDP, implying that even better performance could be achieved at a higher TDP with the Radeon 890M.

Moreover, AMD has made AFMF 2 available for the previous generation RDNA 3 iGPUs, which includes the Radeon 780M found in handheld devices like the Legion Go and ROG Ally Z1 Extreme.
