AMD Gears Up to Unveil Instinct MI350 Series AI Accelerator, Aims for 30x Energy Efficiency Boost by 2025

AMD is gearing up to make waves in the AI arena with its forthcoming Instinct MI350 series, promising substantial performance enhancements. This new lineup aims to rival NVIDIA’s Blackwell offerings and represents a shift in AMD’s strategy, focusing more heavily on hardware alongside its software ecosystem development.

Historically, AMD has taken a more measured approach to AI hardware releases, concentrating on building a robust alternative to NVIDIA’s CUDA. However, the MI350 series marks a significant step forward, demonstrating AMD’s commitment to accelerating its pace. The last major release, the Instinct MI325X AI accelerator, was AMD’s answer to NVIDIA’s Blackwell, and now the company is preparing for the next leap.

During the ISC25 keynote, AMD’s CTO, Mark Papermaster, announced the imminent launch of the next-gen Instinct MI350 AI lineup. Set to debut this Thursday, the MI350 promises a remarkable 35x boost in inferencing capabilities.

The MI350’s expected specs include a cutting-edge 3nm process, up to 288 GB of HBM3E memory, and the incorporation of AMD’s “CDNA 4” architecture. This marks a significant advancement, reflecting the company’s strides in bridging generational gaps in its AI architectures.

Positioned strategically between NVIDIA’s Blackwell and Blackwell Ultra, the MI350 is expected to attract widespread adoption among AMD’s partners, thanks in part to the evolved ROCm platform. Beyond the MI350, AMD has its sights set on continuous improvement, with the upcoming MI355X AI accelerator projected to achieve up to 30x enhancements in energy efficiency.
