Amazon Taps Intel’s Cutting-Edge 18A Node Technology

Intel has officially announced a significant partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to produce custom chips using Intel’s advanced 18A process node. Additionally, Intel will manufacture specialized Xeon processors on its Intel 3 node. Although Intel has not specified which particular chip will utilize the 18A process, it is speculated to be proprietary hardware specifically designed for Amazon.

In a joint venture, both Amazon and Intel will set up operations in Ohio. Amazon’s commitment to this venture is further underscored by its plan to invest an additional $7.8 billion, adding to its previous $10.3 billion investment in the region since 2015. Matt Garman, CEO at AWS, highlighted the historical collaboration between the two companies, noting that their partnership dates back to 2006, when the first Amazon EC2 instance was launched with Intel chips. Garman emphasized that co-developing next-generation AI fabric chips on Intel’s 18A process would empower their joint customers to handle any workload and unlock new AI capabilities.

This partnership announcement closely follows Intel’s $3 billion contract with the United States Department of Defense to manufacture military-grade semiconductors, also utilizing the 18A process. Intel’s 18A node is a pioneering technology in the industry, featuring the innovative backside power delivery.

Despite some initial skepticism from industry players like Broadcom, Intel’s 18A node has shown progress and stands to attract more foundry customers in the near future, potentially including companies like Arm. Intel’s in-house Panther Lake and Clearwater Forest CPUs, which are already operational on the 18A node, have also shown improving yield rates after initial production delays.

For Intel, the collaborations with AWS and the Department of Defense are timely successes, especially in light of recent challenges such as dropping stock prices, controversies over CPU degradation, and missed opportunities like the $30 billion PlayStation 6 chip contract. Increased adoption of the 18A process will help Intel build a robust IP library and ecosystem around its technology, encouraging more companies to consider Intel Foundry Services for their chip manufacturing needs.
