NVIDIA Laptop RTX 5090 Mod Pushes GPU Power to 250W, Delivering Big Performance Gains
NVIDIA’s high-end laptop GPUs have been capped at a maximum power limit of 175W for several generations, but a new AI-assisted modification appears to have pushed past that ceiling. In a recent test, a laptop version of the GeForce RTX 5090 was reportedly unlocked to run at 250W, giving a gaming notebook a major boost in benchmark and gaming performance.
The test was performed on a 2025 XMG Neo 16 gaming laptop equipped with NVIDIA’s laptop RTX 5090. To keep the powerful GPU under control, the system was paired with the Oasis external water cooler, which played a key role in preventing temperatures from spiraling out of control.
Without additional cooling, pushing a laptop GPU this far beyond its intended power limit could easily result in thermal throttling, unstable performance, or long-term hardware damage.
The custom modification was said to be created by PREMO using AI-assisted coding methods. While the exact tool or method was not publicly shared, the goal was clear: bypass NVIDIA’s 175W laptop GPU power restriction and allow the RTX 5090 to pull up to 250W.
The results were impressive.
In 3DMark Steel Nomad, the 250W RTX 5090 laptop GPU delivered a 41.6 percent higher score compared to the same GPU running at the standard 175W power limit. That is a major uplift for a mobile GPU and shows how much performance may be left untapped when power and cooling are restricted.
Gaming performance also saw meaningful improvements across several demanding titles.
In Black Myth: Wukong at Cinematic settings, the modified RTX 5090 achieved a 23.33 percent higher frame rate. Cyberpunk 2077, running at Ultra settings with Ultra ray tracing, gained 23.89 percent. The Witcher 3 also showed a strong increase, with the RTX 5090 producing a 29.73 percent FPS gain at Ultra settings with Ultra ray tracing enabled.
However, not every game benefited equally. Shadow of the Tomb Raider showed only a 3.86 percent improvement, despite being an older and less demanding title compared to the others. During testing, it was noted that when the GPU needed more voltage, it appeared to reject the extra performance headroom and reduced clock speeds. That may explain why the performance uplift in that game was far smaller.
When excluding Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the overall average frame rate gain from raising the RTX 5090 laptop GPU to 250W was around 18.16 percent. For gamers chasing higher frame rates at maximum graphics settings, that is a significant increase.
Still, this kind of modification comes with serious risks.
The Oasis water cooler helped keep GPU temperatures in check, but temperature is only one part of the equation. Gaming laptops are designed around strict power, thermal, and electrical limits. Even if the GPU core stays cool, other components may not be built to handle the extra wattage.
The GPU’s VRMs, chokes, power rails, motherboard circuitry, and even the laptop’s power adapter could be placed under extreme stress. If those parts overheat or fail, the result could be permanent damage to the laptop. In the worst case, a component could burn out entirely.
This is especially important because laptop manufacturers design their cooling systems and internal power delivery around official specifications. A laptop rated for a 175W GPU is not automatically safe at 250W, even if the cooling solution appears strong enough.
Premium gaming laptops may have more robust internal circuitry, but that does not guarantee they can safely handle such a large power increase. For most users, attempting this kind of GPU power limit modification could void the warranty and put an expensive machine at risk.
The test does show something interesting: NVIDIA’s laptop RTX 5090 appears capable of delivering far more performance when given additional power and cooling. However, unlocking that extra performance is not as simple as flipping a switch. It requires specialized knowledge, strong cooling, and hardware that can survive the added electrical load.
For enthusiasts, this 250W RTX 5090 laptop GPU experiment is an exciting look at what mobile graphics hardware can do when pushed beyond factory limits. For everyday gamers, though, it is a reminder that chasing extra performance can come with real consequences.
The performance gains are impressive, but the risk to the laptop’s components, warranty, and long-term reliability makes this type of modification something only experienced users should even consider.
