8BitDo Goes Global: Fresh Bluetooth Wireless Controller Upgrades Launch Worldwide

8BitDo is expanding its lineup of Bluetooth wireless controllers with a fresh set of eye-catching new colors, and this time the company is leaning hard into retro nostalgia. Newly revealed “Prototype Limited Edition” versions of the 8BitDo 64 controller feature translucent shells inspired by classic Nintendo 64 prototype-style colorways, giving them that iconic see-through look collectors love.

According to 8BitDo, these Prototype Limited Edition controllers will be offered in highly limited quantities. That said, the company has used similar language before with past releases like the Funtastic Limited Editions, which are still available at the time of writing. Even so, the new translucent Prototype variants are positioned as a more exclusive drop aimed at fans who want something different from the standard finishes.

In terms of price, the Prototype Limited Edition models cost $44.99. That’s a $5 increase compared to the standard Black and White versions of the 8BitDo 64 controller, but it lines up with what 8BitDo already charges for its Classic Grey and Funtastic Limited Edition options. For many buyers, the extra cost will likely come down to whether the limited-edition translucent design is worth it.

Shipping is expected to begin in April 2026, and availability may be tighter than usual because 8BitDo is only listing these Prototype Limited Edition Bluetooth wireless controllers through its own eShop. If you’re hoping to grab one, it may be the kind of release where waiting too long could mean missing out—especially if the company truly keeps quantities limited this time around.
