Dell XPS 13 Takes Aim at the $599 MacBook Neo, but Windows 11 RAM Usage Raises Concerns
Dell’s latest XPS 13 is being positioned as a direct challenger to Apple’s affordable MacBook Neo, but early impressions suggest that memory management could become a major deciding factor for buyers. While the new XPS 13 brings a sleek design, modern hardware, and a competitive pitch for Windows laptop fans, its base 8GB RAM configuration may struggle against Apple’s efficient unified memory approach.
The MacBook Neo has attracted attention because of its $599 price tag and its ability to deliver smooth performance with just 8GB of unified memory. Apple’s macOS handles memory differently from Windows, allowing the system to stretch limited RAM more effectively in many real-world scenarios. That difference becomes especially important as entry-level laptops continue to ship with 8GB of memory, even as apps, browsers, and operating systems become more demanding.
During Computex 2026, Dell introduced the new XPS 13 as a stylish and capable alternative to Apple’s budget-friendly MacBook. On paper, the device has plenty to offer. It is compact, premium-looking, and designed for productivity users who want a lightweight Windows laptop. However, a closer look at the base model’s memory usage has raised questions about how well it can perform over time.

According to the Windows Task Manager shown in the image, the system was already using around 5.6GB of memory out of its available 8GB. That means roughly 70 percent of the laptop’s RAM was occupied before the user had even started any serious work.
For a laptop aimed at students, office workers, and everyday productivity users, that is a worrying sign. With only a small amount of free memory left, common tasks such as opening multiple browser tabs, running Microsoft Office apps, joining video calls, editing documents, or streaming media could quickly push the system into slower performance. Once a Windows laptop runs low on RAM, it often relies more heavily on storage-based memory swapping, which can reduce responsiveness and affect battery life.
This is where Apple’s MacBook Neo appears to have an advantage. Previous demonstrations have shown the $599 MacBook Neo handling a large number of background apps while streaming video without noticeable slowdowns or dropped frames. That kind of efficiency makes 8GB of unified memory feel more capable than traditional expectations might suggest.
Windows 11, on the other hand, is known for running several background processes and startup apps by default. Many laptop manufacturers also preload additional software, utilities, trial apps, and services that consume memory from the moment the system boots. These background tasks may seem small individually, but together they can take up a significant portion of available RAM.
For the Dell XPS 13, this matters because performance and battery life are two of the most important areas where it must compete with the MacBook Neo. A premium Windows ultraportable needs to feel fast, quiet, and efficient, especially when sold in a lower-cost configuration. If the base 8GB model is already under pressure while idle, buyers may feel pushed toward a more expensive version with extra RAM.
That could weaken the appeal of the entry-level XPS 13. A low starting price looks attractive, but if users need to upgrade memory for a smoother experience, the real cost of ownership rises. This is especially important at a time when memory prices are expected to remain under pressure, making higher-RAM configurations more expensive for both manufacturers and consumers.
The issue is not limited to Dell. Any Windows laptop shipping with 8GB of RAM could face the same challenge if Windows 11 continues to demand a large amount of memory at idle. For casual users, 8GB may still be enough in some situations, but the margin is getting thinner. Modern web browsers alone can consume several gigabytes of RAM when multiple tabs are open, and productivity apps are not getting lighter.
Users who prefer Windows can still improve the experience by managing startup apps, disabling unnecessary background processes, removing preinstalled software, and turning off services they do not need. These steps can help free up memory and improve battery life, but they also require time and technical confidence that many everyday buyers may not have.
The bigger solution needs to come from Microsoft and its hardware partners. Better optimization, fewer unnecessary background services, and cleaner default installations could make 8GB Windows laptops far more competitive. If manufacturers want affordable Windows machines to compete with Apple’s entry-level MacBooks, software efficiency must become a priority, not an afterthought.
The new Dell XPS 13 may still become an excellent laptop, especially in higher-memory configurations. Its design, portability, and Windows ecosystem will appeal to many buyers. But the early RAM usage shown on the base 8GB model highlights a growing problem in the PC market: hardware alone is not enough if the operating system and background software consume too many resources before the user begins working.
For now, the MacBook Neo’s biggest advantage may not be its price or its design, but how efficiently it uses the memory it already has. Unless Windows 11 becomes leaner, affordable 8GB Windows laptops could find it increasingly difficult to compete with Apple’s most budget-friendly MacBook.
