Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Could Stay Relevant as 2nm Flagship Chips Become Too Expensive

The next wave of Android flagship phones may not move to 2nm chips as quickly as many expected. Rising component costs and increasingly expensive manufacturing could push smartphone brands to keep using refined 3nm processors for another generation, especially in standard flagship models.

By late 2026 and into 2027, Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro is expected to appear only in a small number of premium devices. These may include gaming-focused smartphones and top-tier Ultra or Pro Max models from major Android brands. The situation could become even more limited when paired with costly LPDDR6 RAM, which may further increase the price of high-end smartphones.

Even the regular 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 may be too expensive for many next-generation Android flagships. Because of this, phone makers could continue relying on the 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform, particularly for base flagship models. One possible example is the Xiaomi 18, which may use a more cost-effective flagship chip instead of jumping straight to a pricier 2nm option.

This strategy would allow brands to offer strong flagship performance while keeping retail prices more manageable. As smartphone components become more expensive, reusing and optimizing an existing high-end platform can make business sense. Rather than forcing every premium device onto the newest and most expensive silicon, manufacturers may reserve the latest 2nm chips for their most expensive models.

Reports suggest that Qualcomm may be preparing multiple new variants of the SM8850 platform, better known as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Two rumored versions include the SM8850Q and the SM8845 Pro. These chips could arrive under names such as Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 XX Edition, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Pro, or possibly be positioned close to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 lineup.

At the moment, the final branding remains unclear. Technical differences between these rumored variants and the existing Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 are also unknown. They could feature changes in clock speeds, GPU tuning, efficiency improvements, or platform-level optimizations designed to help brands launch new flagship phones at lower costs.

If these rumors prove accurate, 2026 and 2027 Android flagships may become more divided than ever. Ultra-premium devices could feature 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chips and LPDDR6 memory, while more affordable flagship models may continue with improved 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 variants.

For consumers, this could be a positive development. A refined 3nm flagship chip may still deliver excellent gaming performance, strong AI capabilities, efficient battery life, and premium camera processing without dramatically increasing phone prices. Instead of chasing the most expensive chipset, many Android brands may focus on balancing performance, efficiency, and affordability.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 could therefore remain an important part of the Android flagship market for longer than expected. With 2nm chips likely reserved for the most expensive phones, optimized 3nm variants may become the practical choice for many high-end smartphones in the next generation.
