Xbox Delays Fable as GTA VI and Other Blockbusters Crowd the Calendar

Fable Delayed to February 2027 as Xbox Clears Space for Its Big Fantasy RPG

Xbox’s long-awaited Fable reboot will no longer arrive in 2026. The upcoming open-world action RPG from Playground Games has been pushed to February 2027, giving the game a clearer launch window and a better chance to stand out in what is shaping up to be an extremely crowded release season.

The new Fable was previously expected to launch in autumn 2026, sometime between September and November. However, Xbox has confirmed that the game has been moved out of that window because several major titles are scheduled to arrive around the same period.

According to Xbox, the delay is intended to give Fable “the dedicated moment it deserves.” With blockbuster releases such as Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4, Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and Grand Theft Auto VI expected to dominate attention later in 2026, moving Fable to early 2027 could help the game avoid being overshadowed.

The updated release window now places Fable in February 2027. While fans will have to wait a little longer, the delay may ultimately benefit the game by allowing Playground Games more time to polish the experience and giving Xbox a stronger opportunity to market it as a major standalone launch.

More details about Fable are expected to be revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7. That event could offer a closer look at gameplay, story elements, the game’s world, and how Playground Games plans to modernize one of Xbox’s most beloved fantasy franchises.

Fable is being developed as a reboot rather than a direct sequel, despite being the fourth main entry associated with the series. The original Fable trilogy was created by Lionhead Studios, the British developer known for its distinctive blend of fantasy adventure, humor, player choice, and moral consequences. Lionhead Studios was shut down in 2016, leaving the franchise dormant for years before Xbox revived it with Playground Games at the helm.

Playground Games is best known for its work on the Forza Horizon series, which has earned praise for its open-world design, technical polish, and visual quality. Because of that reputation, expectations are high for how the studio will handle Fable’s magical world, character-driven storytelling, and role-playing systems.

The Fable reboot is confirmed for Xbox Series X|S, PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5. At the moment, there is no confirmation that the game will be released on Nintendo Switch 2.

Although the delay may disappoint fans who were hoping to return to Albion in 2026, the new February 2027 launch window could give Fable the breathing room it needs. With fewer major releases competing for attention, Xbox’s fantasy RPG may have a stronger chance to capture the spotlight when it finally arrives.
