Microsoft may be getting ready to add Buy Now, Pay Later payment options to the Xbox store, based on newly spotted references hidden inside the Xbox website’s code.
The discovery suggests that Microsoft could eventually allow customers to split Xbox purchases into smaller installments instead of paying the full price at checkout. Payment services reportedly referenced in the site’s backend include Klarna and PayPal Pay in 4, both of which are commonly used for short-term installment plans.
If the feature is rolled out, it could apply to a wide range of Xbox purchases. Players may be able to use installment payments for Xbox consoles, controllers, headsets, other accessories, digital games, and possibly even Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. For shoppers looking at bigger purchases, such as a new Xbox Series X or Series S bundle, the option to spread payments over time could make the upfront cost feel more manageable.
Microsoft has not officially confirmed any new Buy Now, Pay Later feature for the Xbox store, so it is still unclear when, or if, the option will become available to the public. However, the discovery lines up with a growing trend in gaming and online retail. As video game prices rise and gaming hardware becomes more expensive, companies are exploring flexible payment methods to keep products accessible to more customers.
The idea is already sparking mixed reactions among Xbox fans. Some players may welcome installment payments as a useful budgeting tool, especially when buying high-priced hardware or multiple games at once. For families, the option could make it easier to plan larger gaming purchases around monthly expenses rather than paying everything upfront.
However, others are concerned about the risks. Buy Now, Pay Later services can make spending feel easier, but missed payments may lead to fees or financial stress. Critics argue that these options could encourage some users, especially younger players, to buy more than they can realistically afford.
Microsoft has already tested a similar approach with Xbox All Access, a program that lets customers get an Xbox console and Game Pass through monthly payments. Adding Buy Now, Pay Later options directly to the Xbox digital storefront could be a broader extension of that strategy, giving players more flexibility when purchasing games, subscriptions, and hardware.
For now, Xbox users will have to wait for an official announcement. But if Microsoft does introduce installment payments on the Xbox store, it could change how many players buy consoles, games, and Game Pass subscriptions in the future.
