Aaeon UP WCL arrives as a compact Intel-powered Raspberry Pi alternative for AI and Windows workloads
Aaeon has introduced the UP WCL, a new single-board computer designed for users who need far more processing power than a typical Raspberry Pi-class board can provide. Built around Intel Core processors and offering Windows compatibility, this compact board is aimed at professional developers, embedded system builders, industrial users, and businesses working on AI, edge computing, automation, and IoT projects.
The UP WCL stands out because it combines a small footprint with serious computing potential. Measuring just 85 x 56 mm, it is close in size to many popular maker boards, but its performance class is very different. Depending on the configuration, the board can be equipped with an Intel Core 7 350, Intel Core 5 320, or Intel Core 3 304 processor. These chips give the UP WCL enough power for demanding embedded applications, local computing tasks, and AI workloads that would be difficult or impossible to run smoothly on lower-power hobbyist boards.
One of the biggest highlights is AI acceleration. Aaeon says the UP WCL can deliver up to 40 TOPS of AI performance, allowing AI models to run directly on the device rather than relying on cloud processing. This makes the board especially interesting for edge AI applications such as machine vision, smart retail systems, robotics, industrial monitoring, automated inspection, and intelligent kiosks.
Memory and storage options are also stronger than what many compact single-board computers offer. The UP WCL supports up to 24 GB of LPDDR5 RAM, giving developers more flexibility for multitasking, heavier software environments, and AI-related workloads. For onboard storage, it supports up to 256 GB of UFS storage. There is also an M.2 2230 Key E slot, which can be used for additional connectivity options such as wireless modules, depending on the final system design.
For display output, the board includes HDMI 2.1 with support for 4K resolution. This makes it suitable for digital signage, compact workstations, interactive displays, and industrial control panels where high-resolution video output is needed.
Connectivity is another strong area. The UP WCL includes three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, making it easy to connect peripherals, external drives, cameras, input devices, or other accessories. Wired networking is handled through Ethernet with speeds of up to 2.5 Gbit/s, which is a valuable feature for professional and industrial environments where stable, high-speed network access is important.
While the UP WCL may be considered a powerful Raspberry Pi alternative, it is not a direct replacement for every maker-focused project. Unlike the Raspberry Pi, it does not include the familiar 40-pin GPIO header. Instead, Aaeon provides a 10-pin connector with access to eight GPIO pins, along with I2C, PWM, and SPI. This still allows sensors, actuators, and other hardware components to be connected, but the board is clearly designed more for professional embedded use than for hobbyist expansion ecosystems.
The board is powered by a 12-volt input, which fits well with industrial and embedded deployments. Given the performance level of the Intel processors, active or passive cooling will likely be required in many use cases, especially when running sustained workloads or AI processing tasks.
Software support is another major selling point. Aaeon lists Windows 11 LTSC and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as supported operating systems. Windows compatibility could make the UP WCL particularly attractive for businesses that rely on Windows-based software, management tools, or custom applications. Ubuntu support also gives developers a familiar Linux environment for embedded development, AI frameworks, and server-style deployments.
Aaeon has not yet announced pricing for the UP WCL. However, based on its hardware and target market, the board appears to be aimed primarily at professional customers rather than casual hobbyists. For businesses looking for a compact Intel-powered single-board computer with strong AI performance, high-speed connectivity, and support for both Windows and Linux, the UP WCL could become a compelling option in the growing edge computing market.
