Stripe and Advent Weighed $53.4B Takeover Bid for PayPal

Stripe and Advent International reportedly bid $53.4 billion for PayPal

Stripe and private equity firm Advent International have reportedly made a joint offer to buy PayPal in a deal worth about $53.4 billion, a move that could reshape the global digital payments industry.

According to reports, the bid was submitted earlier this month and is supported by around $50 billion in committed bank financing. If the proposal moves forward, Stripe and Advent would become equal owners of PayPal, giving each side a 50% stake in one of the world’s most recognized online payment platforms.

The reported offer is not the first time Stripe has been connected to a possible PayPal acquisition. Earlier this year, there were claims that Stripe had explored the idea of a takeover and held early discussions, though no formal bid was made at that stage.

A successful deal would bring together two major forces in financial technology. PayPal has around 440 million active accounts worldwide and is expected to handle roughly $1.8 trillion in payment volume in 2025. Stripe, widely used by businesses for online payment processing, is also projected to process about $1.9 trillion in payments during the same period. Stripe’s valuation reportedly rose to $159 billion earlier this year, strengthening its position as one of the most valuable private fintech companies in the world.

PayPal has not publicly responded to the reported acquisition offer.

The timing is especially important for PayPal, which has been under pressure to improve growth and profitability. CEO Enrique Lores took charge in March after the company issued a profit warning. Since then, PayPal has been working on a cost-cutting strategy that aims to reduce expenses by at least $1.5 billion over the next two to three years. Reports have also suggested that the company may cut about 20% of its workforce as part of its broader restructuring efforts.

If Stripe and Advent International succeed in acquiring PayPal, the deal could become one of the largest fintech acquisitions in history. It would combine PayPal’s massive consumer network with Stripe’s strong business-focused payments infrastructure, potentially creating a dominant player across online checkout, merchant services, digital wallets and global payment processing.

For now, the future of the deal remains uncertain. PayPal, Stripe and Advent International have not issued official statements confirming the reported bid or outlining what might happen next.
