Amid criticism surrounding the ‘bloat’ of Windows 11, a developer known as NTDEV has revealed a version of the operating system compressed to a mere 100MB. This feat of software engineering is just the latest foray by NTDEV into minimizing Windows 11, although this version is more a technical showcase than a fully functional OS.
What’s Included in the 100MB Windows 11 Package?
The 100MB variant of Windows 11 is understandably minimal. It is stripped of the entire graphical user interface (GUI), leaving behind only a command line interface (CLI) reminiscent of the DOS era. While it may evoke a sense of nostalgia, this lean version demands familiarity with navigating via commands. It still retains compatibility for Windows 11 applications, but given the absence of a GUI, the appeal is likely limited to enthusiasts rather than the average user. Moreover, all security features have been omitted, including updates and malware protection, making it unsuitable for general use despite its impressiveness.
Past and Future NTDEV Projects
NTDEV is known for pushing the boundaries of operating system customization. Before creating the 100MB Windows 11, NTDEV introduced Tiny11—a reduced version of Windows 11 that eschews much of the original’s bulk and lower hardware requirements, presenting a more practical alternative for users. This project has remained active, with updates such as the integration of Copilot support and the capability for Windows 11 updates released in November of 2023.
NTDEV’s previous efforts also include Tiny10, a lightweight counterpart to Windows 10 aiming to serve those with significantly older hardware. These projects come in response to a segment of users and tech enthusiasts who prefer leaner OS versions that hark back to simpler times, countering the trend of software becoming more feature-heavy.
The creation of these streamlined Windows variants highlights an ongoing preference among some users for minimalism and efficiency, especially in an era where not everyone requires or desires the full breadth of features offered in the latest operating system versions.
