This decision proved beneficial for the Nothing Phone 3, allowing it to maintain a competitive price while still being marketed as a flagship device. Despite not using a top-tier SoC, the company stands by its choice, emphasizing cost-effectiveness and user experience.
In an insightful interview, Nothing’s AI executive, Sélim Benayat, shed light on why the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 was selected over the pricier Snapdragon 8 Elite. The decision was not only cost-driven but also aimed at delivering the right balance of performance and user satisfaction. Qualcomm’s top-tier SoC, featuring advanced Oryon cores, significantly raises production costs—estimated between $200 to $240 per unit—pushing many manufacturers to consider more economical alternatives.
Benayat highlighted that while they considered various components, the focus was never solely on having the latest chipset. Instead, Nothing aims to craft a seamless tech-human interface that prioritizes features users truly desire. This philosophy steers them away from merely following competitors and towards creating meaningful experiences.
As for future plans, while Nothing hasn’t ruled out using flagship processors, the cost implications of Qualcomm’s next-generation chips remain a consideration. If the company aims to introduce a high-end $1,000 smartphone, it might explore incorporating the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2, especially given its advanced manufacturing process.
