Western IDMs’ Grid-to-Core Drive Puts Taiwan Power Module Makers Under Pressure

Data center power infrastructure is undergoing a major transformation as operators look for more efficient ways to support the rapid growth of AI computing, cloud services, and high-density server racks. One of the biggest shifts now gaining momentum is the move toward 800V high-voltage direct current power systems, often referred to as 800V HVDC, along with more compact and powerful DC-DC conversion designs.

This transition is being driven by a simple but urgent challenge: modern data centers are consuming far more electricity than before. As server performance rises, especially in facilities built for artificial intelligence workloads, traditional power delivery systems are becoming less efficient and harder to scale. Higher-voltage DC architectures can help reduce energy losses, improve power density, and simplify power distribution across large facilities.

The growing interest in 800V HVDC systems is also increasing demand for advanced power semiconductors and power modules. Data center operators need components that can handle higher voltages, operate with lower power loss, and support high-frequency switching. These requirements are pushing the industry toward next-generation power devices designed for greater efficiency, reliability, and thermal performance.

At the same time, suppliers are moving beyond basic component production. The market is increasingly shifting toward integrated power solutions that combine control, protection, and module-level design. Instead of selling individual power devices alone, manufacturers are being asked to deliver complete systems that can improve energy efficiency, reduce design complexity, and help data center operators deploy new power architectures faster.

This change presents both an opportunity and a challenge for Taiwan’s power module manufacturers. Taiwan has a strong position in the global electronics and server supply chain, but the move to high-voltage data center power systems requires fast adaptation. Companies will need to strengthen their expertise in high-voltage design, packaging, thermal management, and system-level integration to remain competitive.

As AI data centers continue expanding, power efficiency is becoming just as important as computing performance. The industry’s push toward 800V HVDC and denser DC-DC power conversion could reshape the data center power supply market over the next several years. Manufacturers that can deliver low-loss, high-frequency, and highly integrated power solutions are likely to benefit most from this next phase of infrastructure growth.
