Volkswagen Sport eBike debuts with rearview camera, blind-spot alerts, and smart safety features
A new Volkswagen-branded electric bike is aiming to stand out in the growing e-bike market with a strong focus on rider safety, connected features, and everyday practicality. Called the Volkswagen Sport eBike, the model is being promoted by N Plus as the world’s first “smart e-bike,” although several connected e-bikes already offer similar digital functions. Even so, this new model brings together an impressive mix of technology designed to make urban riding safer and more convenient.
One of the biggest highlights of the Volkswagen Sport eBike is its rearview camera system. The camera feed can be shown on the bike’s display, giving riders a better view of what is happening behind them without needing to turn around. A rear-facing radar can automatically activate the camera, helping riders stay aware of approaching vehicles and potential hazards.
The e-bike also includes blind-spot monitoring, a feature more commonly associated with cars than bicycles. This system is designed to warn riders when another road user is approaching from an area that may be difficult to see. For commuters who ride in traffic, this could be one of the bike’s most useful safety upgrades.
Volkswagen’s smart e-bike concept also extends beyond the bike itself. The optional Smart Helmet can display braking and turning signals to other road users through built-in lights, making the rider’s intentions clearer in busy traffic. This could help improve visibility, especially during night rides or in poor weather conditions.
There is also an optional pair of smart glasses that can show navigation prompts and blind-spot warnings directly in the rider’s field of view. However, these glasses connect through a smartphone rather than directly to the e-bike. Still, the combination of navigation, visibility alerts, and safety notifications gives the Volkswagen Sport eBike a futuristic edge.
In terms of performance, the Volkswagen Sport eBike uses a Yamaha PW-X3 mid-drive motor. This motor delivers up to 85 Nm of torque, which should provide strong assistance for climbing hills, accelerating from stops, and handling daily commutes. The bike is powered by a removable 490 Wh battery, making charging more convenient for riders who prefer to take the battery indoors.
For those who need more range, N Plus also offers an optional 814 Wh rack-mounted battery. While this range extender can increase riding distance, it may also affect the bike’s overall balance and weight distribution because of its placement.
The Volkswagen Sport eBike weighs around 27.5 kg and uses a classic frame design with an aluminum construction. It comes equipped with a 9-speed Shimano Cues drivetrain, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, and a powerful 100-lux front light for improved visibility. Illuminated Volkswagen logos at the front and rear add a distinctive design touch and help reinforce the bike’s branding.
The Volkswagen Sport eBike is now available to order at a starting price of $3,999, with deliveries expected in the fourth quarter. Customers who place a pre-order will receive the rearview camera at no extra cost. The optional Smart Helmet and Smart Glasses are priced at $499 each, while the range extender battery costs $848.
With its combination of a Yamaha mid-drive motor, blind-spot detection, rearview camera, smart helmet support, and optional augmented navigation features, the Volkswagen Sport eBike is clearly targeting riders who want more than a basic electric bicycle. While the “world’s first smart e-bike” claim may be up for debate, this Volkswagen-branded model still brings a strong package of safety and connected riding features to the premium e-bike market.
