The update was shared by Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the president and lead developer of VLC, who confirmed the achievement in an email. The milestone arrives roughly 18 months after VLC passed 6 billion downloads in January 2025, showing that the long-running media player is still attracting a massive global audience.
Developed by the non-profit VideoLAN project, VLC has earned its reputation by supporting a wide range of audio and video formats without requiring extra codec packs. Its ability to play local media files, discs, network streams, and many lesser-used file types has helped it remain one of the most trusted media players for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and other platforms.
Kempf also revealed that VLC has recently been ported to Amazon’s new Vega OS for TVs. This move expands VLC’s reach further into the smart TV space, giving more users a familiar way to play their own media libraries directly on television hardware.
VideoLAN is also continuing work on broader platform and codec support. The team is preparing for the long-awaited VLC 4 release, although development is taking time. The project previously teased AI-powered translation and subtitle features using local models. However, it remains unclear whether those tools have been fully released to users.
