Village in the Shade Twists Cozy Farming Into a Dark RPG Adventure

Village in the Shade brings eerie farming RPG life to PS5, Switch, Switch 2, and PC

Village in the Shade is set to launch in the West on October 27 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. Developed by Nippon Ichi Software, the studio known for Disgaea and Phantom Brave, this hand-painted farming RPG blends peaceful countryside life with a darker mystery hiding just beneath the surface.

Originally released in Japan on July 30 under the title Honogurashi no Niwa, the game has already become a strong performer, with more than 250,000 copies sold in Japan. Now, Western players will get the chance to explore its haunting mountain village, build a new life, and decide how far they are willing to go to uncover the truth.

In Village in the Shade, players move to Kagatsu, a quiet Japanese mountain village where daily life appears warm and inviting. You can grow crops, decorate and expand your homestead, go fishing, hunt for resources, and form bonds with the villagers. Seasonal events also bring the community to life, including cherry blossom viewing and a summer festival.

However, Kagatsu is not as peaceful as it first seems. The village has strict rules that every resident is expected to follow: do not talk to strangers, do not leave the village, and do not go outside at night. Players can obey these warnings and enjoy a calm rural routine, or they can break the rules and investigate the unsettling secrets surrounding the village.

For those who prefer a purely cozy farming experience, Village in the Shade includes a mode called Village in the Sunshine. In this version, the darker rules cannot be broken, allowing players to focus entirely on farming, fishing, hunting, crafting, and village life without the horror elements.

A free launch update will arrive alongside the worldwide release. This update adds a birthday event for the protagonist, which becomes available starting in the second in-game year. It also introduces new furniture options, including plumbing fixtures that let players build a bathroom in their home.

More content is also planned after launch. A paid DLC expansion is scheduled for Spring 2027 and is expected to add new scenarios, additional gameplay systems, standalone events, and new maps.

The PC version of Village in the Shade has modest system requirements. Minimum specs include Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-6400 processor, 8 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 750 Ti graphics card, DirectX 11, and 9 GB of storage space. Recommended specs call for an Intel Core i5-12500, 16 GB of RAM, and a GeForce GTX 1650, while keeping the same 9 GB storage requirement.

On PlayStation 5, Village in the Shade supports DualSense wireless controller vibration, adding extra feedback to the game’s atmosphere and activities. A physical Limited Edition is also available for $89.99. The package includes the 38-track soundtrack, Sounds from the Shade. For Nintendo Switch 2, the Limited Edition version includes a game key card.

With its mix of cozy farming simulation, Japanese village folklore, RPG progression, and creeping horror, Village in the Shade stands out as one of the more unusual farming games of the year. Players looking for a relaxing life sim can stay in the light, while those drawn to mystery can step into the darkness and discover what Kagatsu is trying to hide.
