Valve’s forthcoming standalone VR headset, known by its codename Deckard, is generating quite a buzz in the tech community. This device, poised to be a significant step up from the Valve Index, has been the subject of recent leaks suggesting a $1200 price point. Enthusiasts have pieced together some intriguing information, especially concerning its innovative controllers and tracking technology.
Thanks to data mining efforts, we’ve discovered that the Deckard’s controllers, dubbed “Roy,” have shown up in SteamVR’s code. These controllers are anticipated to feature a pivotal redesign, foregoing the traditional motion-tracking rings for a sleeker, more ergonomic look. This design choice mirrors industry trends, such as Meta’s new approach with the Quest 3S. Based on images of early prototypes, Deckard’s controllers are equipped with a large D-pad, ABXY buttons, and notably oversized triggers alongside side-mounted ones. This configuration hints at a more conventional gamepad-like experience, potentially indicating a foundation for integrating features akin to the Steam Controller 2.
A lingering concern, however, is the device’s capability to handle demanding requirements like running games at 120Hz and 1440p on dual screens. Battery life remains another possible challenge. Its lack of finger tracking—a feature present in the Valve Index—might disappoint some users, who may perceive it as a step backwards.
Speculation is swirling around whether Valve will simultaneously launch a new Half-Life game with Deckard. Previously, Valve capitalized on Half-Life: Alyx to highlight the Index’s capabilities. There is speculation that a new VR flagship title might debut with the Deckard to boost its appeal. Yet, if Valve focuses primarily on Deckard, this could potentially delay the rollout of other anticipated projects like HLX.
It seems Valve is meticulously planning to ensure both the hardware and the software ecosystem are primed for a seamless launch. While the company remains tight-lipped about specifics, the growing number of leaks and code references suggests they are making progress.
