A recent discussion has emerged surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2, as a user’s experience hints that using second-hand games might inadvertently lead to console issues. A Reddit post reveals that one user’s console was banned after attempting to run a pre-owned Nintendo Switch game on their Switch 2.
The user detailed their interaction, emphasizing positive feedback about Nintendo’s support team. However, it’s important to note that this incident is isolated and has not been officially acknowledged by Nintendo.
The user had bought several second-hand games through Facebook Marketplace. After installing necessary patches and attempting to play, the console reported restricted access to online services, eventually confirming a ban. The situation required the user to send evidence of the purchase, such as photos of the listings and cartridges, to Nintendo. After this, their account was reactivated.
Nintendo explained that the ban resulted from the previous owner creating a disk image from the cartridges. This was detected through online features and cartridge serial numbers, leading to the account’s suspension. Console bans can prevent users from accessing updates or downloadable content and from using game key cards.
This case highlights potential challenges in buying second-hand games, though the risk remains minimal. It serves as a reminder of the precautions users might need to take when purchasing pre-owned game cartridges.
