Xbox users have voiced their frustration over mobile game advertisements popping up on their consoles. The discontent isn’t new; even 14 years ago, players were looking for creative ways to block these ads using DNS rerouting and ad server blacklisting through OpenDNS or router-level controls.
On a recent Reddit discussion, one user highlighted that past experiences with ads were even worse, while another expressed concerns about seeing mobile game promotions on a console that costs as much as $599.99, especially after a recent price hike.
Given Microsoft’s ownership of Activision Blizzard, the company behind Call of Duty: Mobile, these ads are part of a larger cross-platform strategy. However, many gamers believe advertisements should be relevant to the console experience. The sentiment grows stronger when comparing Xbox’s ad-heavy interface to Sony and Nintendo’s cleaner, ad-free home screens.
In a previous post, a full-screen Starfield boot-up ad was labeled “awful,” raising questions about why premium hardware is promoting additional products. There are also reports of Microsoft experimenting with different ad formats within the Xbox Insider Program, including dashboard tiles and reward-based promos.
Overall, players are calling for an ad experience that feels worthwhile for those who have already invested significantly in their gaming setups.
