Verbatim Introduces USB-C Rechargeable AA, AAA, and 9V Batteries for Everyday Devices
Verbatim is preparing to launch a new range of rechargeable batteries designed to make powering everyday gadgets simpler and more convenient. The lineup includes rechargeable AA batteries, AAA batteries, and a 9V battery, all featuring built-in USB-C charging.
The biggest advantage is clear: users will not need a separate battery charger. Instead, the batteries can be connected directly to a USB-C cable, making them easier to recharge at home, in the office, or while traveling.
Unlike many traditional rechargeable batteries that use NiMH chemistry and typically provide 1.2V, Verbatim’s new models use lithium-ion cells with integrated voltage conversion. This allows the AA and AAA versions to deliver 1.5V, while the larger model provides 9V output.
That difference matters. Some devices do not perform well with standard 1.2V rechargeable batteries, especially products that expect the higher voltage of disposable alkaline cells. In certain cases, devices may show inaccurate battery levels or stop working earlier than expected. By maintaining the expected voltage, Verbatim’s USB-C rechargeable batteries are intended to work as direct replacements for regular disposable batteries.
The new batteries are aimed at common household and professional devices such as remote controls, wireless keyboards, computer mice, flashlights, toys, microphones, smoke detectors, portable radios, and other battery-powered accessories.
One detail that remains unclear is how the batteries handle their discharge behavior. Some lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are designed to mimic the gradual voltage drop of traditional batteries, allowing basic devices to estimate remaining charge more accurately. Others maintain a steady voltage until they are nearly empty, which can cause a device to stop working suddenly with little warning. Verbatim has not yet confirmed which approach its new batteries use.
Charging convenience is one of the main selling points. The AA and AAA models come with a multi-connector charging cable, allowing several batteries to be recharged without carrying multiple cables. The AAA battery design is also notable because its USB-C port is positioned lengthwise, a space-saving approach for such a compact battery size.
In terms of energy capacity, the AAA battery is rated at 0.75Wh, the AA battery at 3.15Wh, and the 9V battery at around 3Wh. Verbatim also provides capacity figures in mAh, with the AAA listed at approximately 500mAh and the 9V version at 335mAh. However, these numbers should not be compared directly because the batteries operate at different voltages. In real energy storage, the 9V battery can hold more energy than the mAh rating may suggest.
The arrival of USB-C rechargeable AA and AAA batteries could be especially useful for users looking to reduce waste and cut down on disposable battery purchases. With more devices adopting USB-C as a universal charging standard, batteries that can be recharged the same way as phones, tablets, earbuds, and laptops offer a practical upgrade for everyday use.
Verbatim says the new rechargeable USB-C batteries are expected to become available within the next few weeks. Pricing has not yet been announced.
