Verbatim Launches USB-C Rechargeable AA and AAA Lithium-Ion Batteries

Verbatim Launches USB-C Rechargeable AA, AAA and 9V Lithium-Ion Batteries in Europe

Verbatim has introduced a new range of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in Europe, offering a modern alternative to disposable AA, AAA and 9V batteries. The key feature is built-in USB-C charging, allowing users to recharge the batteries directly without needing a traditional battery charger.

The new lineup includes AA and AAA batteries designed to output 1.5V, as well as a 9V model for compatible devices. Unlike standard NiMH rechargeable batteries, these new Verbatim cells use lithium-ion technology combined with voltage conversion. This allows them to deliver the same voltage as common alkaline batteries, making them suitable for many everyday devices that normally rely on disposable cells.

For users looking to reduce battery waste and simplify charging, the built-in USB-C port is a major convenience. Instead of keeping a separate charger at home, the batteries can be topped up using a USB-C cable. Verbatim says the batteries can be recharged many times, with a lifespan of at least 1,000 charging cycles under certain conditions.

However, there are a few important limitations to keep in mind. Because these lithium-ion batteries maintain a steady voltage output, some devices may not accurately detect the remaining battery level. Many gadgets estimate battery charge by monitoring voltage drops, but these batteries continue providing a constant 1.5V or 9V until they are close to empty. As a result, devices such as smart radiator thermostats or other battery-sensitive electronics may not show a reliable low-battery warning.

Capacity also varies depending on the model. The AAA version offers 0.75Wh, the AA battery provides 3.15Wh, and the 9V model delivers around 3Wh. While these figures may be suitable for many household electronics, they may not be ideal for low-power devices that are expected to run for months at a time.

Another factor is self-discharge. According to the product details, the batteries should not be stored for more than 60 days without being recharged. This makes them less practical for devices like remote controls, emergency accessories or equipment that sits unused for long periods. They are better suited for items that are used and recharged regularly.

Verbatim also notes that battery capacity will decrease over time. The cells are rated to retain around 80% capacity after at least 300 recharge cycles, while up to approximately 1,000 cycles may be possible with significantly reduced remaining capacity.

In terms of pricing, four-packs of the AA and AAA USB-C rechargeable batteries are listed at 12.99 euros, while the single 9V battery is priced at 7.99 euros.

Overall, Verbatim’s USB-C rechargeable lithium-ion batteries offer a convenient and eco-friendlier option for users who frequently replace disposable batteries. They are especially appealing for regularly used gadgets where easy recharging matters most. However, for long-term storage, ultra-low-power devices or electronics that depend on voltage-based battery readings, traditional rechargeable NiMH batteries may still be the better choice.
