One of the key perks of a PS Plus Premium subscription is access to a selection of retro games. However, the library’s growth isn’t keeping pace with fan expectations. In a recent interview, it was revealed that Sony often depends on publishers and developers to submit games for inclusion.
Fans of classic games express frustration over the limited titles available on PS Plus Premium. Despite Sony’s vast back catalog, many iconic PlayStation games are still missing. It turns out that the submission process often begins with studios reaching out to Sony. For instance, Alex Lotz from Ziggurat shared in an interview how they proactively contacted Sony to feature their 2003 game, Battle Engine Aquila. Sony tackled the technical challenges of emulating it for the PS4 and PS5, while Ziggurat approved the builds and added to the trophy list. This game is now accessible for free to PS Plus Premium members, with others needing to pay.
Players might be intrigued to know that PlayStation is quite open to suggestions from creators of retro games. Unfortunately, this does not translate to a more extensive library for console owners. Some big names like Chrono Trigger, as well as some Resident Evil and Tomb Raider titles, remain missing. Critics call for Sony to be more proactive in securing these beloved classics.
The trend of remakes and remasters could explain the scarcity of retro games on the service. Publishers often find it profitable to revamp old games with improved graphics and controls, allowing them to charge a premium. In contrast, Sony’s subscription service could potentially offer a cost-effective way to explore a wide array of games under one roof.
Another challenge in delivering classic titles involves licensing. Obtaining rights for these older games often requires the agreement of several partners, some of which might no longer exist.
For now, PlayStation enthusiasts seeking a more comprehensive collection must turn to PCs, other consoles, or emulators.
