In an exciting turn of events, Ubisoft has unveiled a new subsidiary aimed at enhancing its legendary Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six series. This bold move is backed by a significant €1.16 billion minority stake investment from Tencent, signaling a new chapter for one of the gaming industry’s giants.
This strategic subsidiary comes after a deliberate internal process by Ubisoft to chart a forward-focused path, a plan they had hinted at earlier this year. The subsidiary’s primary mission is to create “evergreen and multi-platform game ecosystems.” The goal is to elevate the quality of single-player narratives, amplify multiplayer content with more frequent updates, and introduce free-to-play elements alongside new social features.
As part of this visionary effort, the company is also turning its attention to nurturing and expanding other iconic franchises like Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and The Division. There’s a strong emphasis on accelerating the growth of their top titles, exploring disruptive technologies with fresh intellectual properties, and delivering cutting-edge gaming engines and online services.
Yves Guillemot, Co-Founder and CEO of Ubisoft, expressed his enthusiasm about this new venture, noting that it marks the beginning of a transformative era for the company. Guillemot emphasized the importance of building robust game ecosystems intended to thrive over time, while also developing new high-performing brands and leveraging the latest technologies.
According to Guillemot, “With the creation of a dedicated subsidiary that will spearhead development for three of our largest franchises and the onboarding of Tencent as a minority investor, we are solidifying the value of our assets and setting the stage for sustained growth and success.”
In addition to boosting Ubisoft’s credibility and financial robustness, this new subsidiary will focus on transforming these beloved gaming brands into unique ecosystems. The plan is to sharpen the company’s organizational focus, unleash creative teams to elevate brands, and harness next-gen technologies and services—all with the ultimate goal of offering players unforgettable gaming experiences and delivering optimal value for shareholders.
Martin Lau, President of Tencent, echoed this optimistic outlook, expressing excitement about expanding their partnership with Ubisoft. Lau highlighted a shared confidence in Ubisoft’s creative vision and acknowledged the tremendous potential for these franchises to evolve into enduring gaming platforms that captivate players with fresh, engaging content.
In this new venture, Ubisoft seems poised to embark on a thrilling journey that promises innovation, quality, and a renewed commitment to its iconic franchises, all while delighting existing fans and attracting new ones.
