After Two Decades, Assassin’s Creed Architect Exits Ubisoft

Marc-Alexis Cote, one of the key architects behind Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise, has exited the company after more than 20 years. His departure lands just months after a sweeping corporate restructuring and the creation of a new Tencent-backed subsidiary set up to oversee Ubisoft’s biggest brands.

Cote joined Ubisoft in 2005 as a software engineer and steadily climbed the ranks through roles in tools and engine programming, level design, and project leadership. From 2010 onward, he became a central figure on Assassin’s Creed, shaping both the creative and production vision that helped turn the series into one of Ubisoft’s flagship properties.

The timing aligns with a major overhaul announced in March 2025 that brought a $1.8 billion investment from Tencent to reduce debt and bolster Ubisoft’s defenses against potential hostile takeovers. As part of that shift, Ubisoft carved out its three largest franchises—Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six—into a new entity called Vantage Studios, in which Tencent holds a 25% stake.

According to internal communications reported by IGN, Cote was offered a leadership role at Vantage Studios but declined and opted to pursue opportunities outside the company. In an email to staff, co-CEOs Charlie Guillemot and Christophe Dennes expressed disappointment at his decision while emphasizing respect for his expectations and vision regarding the subsidiary’s future.

Ubisoft acknowledged Cote’s departure with a message of appreciation, noting that while the company is sad to see him go, it’s confident the teams he helped build are well positioned to carry the Assassin’s Creed legacy forward. The statement underscored how instrumental he has been in defining the series’ identity and long-term strategy.

Across nearly two decades, Cote’s impact is woven through many of the franchise’s most formative releases. Highlights include:
– Mission Director on Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (2010)
– Co-director on Assassin’s Creed III (2012)
– Creative Director on Assassin’s Creed III: The Tyranny of King Washington (2013)
– Additional design on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Freedom Cry (2014)
– Creative Director on Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (2015) and its Dreadful Crimes DLC (2016)
– Senior Producer on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (2018)

His contributions extended beyond Assassin’s Creed as well. Cote served as Lead Engine Programmer on Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (2010) and as Executive Producer on Immortals Fenyx Rising (2020), showcasing a broad range of technical and creative leadership across Ubisoft’s portfolio.

Since 2022, Cote had been guiding global teams on Assassin’s Creed, helping to shape long-term plans and reinforcing the franchise as a cornerstone of Ubisoft’s lineup. His exit marks the end of an era for the series and arrives at a pivotal moment as the company reorganizes around its biggest brands under the Vantage Studios umbrella.

What happens next for Assassin’s Creed will be closely watched by fans and the industry alike. Ubisoft maintains that the strong foundation Cote helped build—and the experienced teams behind it—will continue to drive the franchise’s evolution. For a series known for reinventing itself across generations, this leadership change could open a new chapter while preserving the vision that made Assassin’s Creed a global success.
