Ubiqconn Technology is doubling down on Taiwan’s rapidly growing unmanned vehicle and AI sector by moving into the Shalun Artificial Intelligence Industrial Zone and setting up a new research and development base. The goal is ambitious: to build Taiwan’s first application ecosystem centered on a collaborative control platform for unmanned vehicles, a move that could accelerate how drones and other autonomous systems are developed, managed, and deployed across industries.
The company announced the relocation this month, positioning the new Shalun R&D hub as a key step in strengthening its capabilities in unmanned vehicles and edge computing. Edge computing has become increasingly important for autonomous technology because it allows vehicles to process data closer to where it’s generated, reducing delays and enabling faster decision-making. For unmanned systems operating in dynamic environments, that speed and reliability can translate into safer navigation, smoother coordination, and better real-world performance.
By establishing an R&D base in southern Taiwan, Ubiqconn also aligns its expansion with the government’s Big South New Silicon Valley initiative. This broader strategy aims to cultivate advanced technology clusters in the south, drawing research talent, encouraging innovation, and supporting new industrial ecosystems. Shalun’s AI-focused industrial zone provides a fitting launchpad for collaborative development, especially for technologies that require integration across hardware, software, communications, and real-time intelligence.
Ubiqconn’s plan to create an “application ecosystem” signals that it’s thinking beyond a single product release. Instead, the company is aiming to create a platform-driven environment where applications, partners, and use cases can grow around shared control technology for unmanned vehicles. If executed well, this approach could help streamline development for enterprise and public-sector deployments, potentially supporting multiple autonomous vehicle types and scenarios under one coordinated framework.
