Xteink is back with another pocket-friendly e-reader, and this time it comes with a big change that could make it far more versatile than the brand’s earlier compact models. Recently launched in China as the Xteink S4, the new device keeps the small form factor that made the Xteink X4 and X3 appealing, but swaps the company’s custom software for Android.
The headline upgrade is the operating system. Instead of a proprietary interface, the Xteink S4 runs Android 11 out of the box. While Android 11 is not the latest version, the move to Android can still be a major advantage for readers who want more flexibility. It potentially opens the door to a wider selection of reading apps and productivity tools compared with a locked-down e-reader OS. That said, there’s no confirmation of Google Apps and Services support, so some apps may need to be installed through sideloading depending on how the software is set up.
Design-wise, the Xteink S4 arrives in black and leans into a more modern look with large bezels and a noticeably thicker bottom chin. That lower section appears to include a capacitive button rather than the physical buttons seen on previous models, though the S4 still retains physical buttons along each side for page turns or navigation. Like earlier compact devices from the brand, it’s designed to magnetically attach to the back of a smartphone thanks to built-in magnets, positioning it as a convenient secondary display for distraction-free reading on the go.
In terms of specs, the Xteink S4 sticks with a 4.3-inch display, matching the size used on the Xteink X4. It includes 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, with storage likely expandable. Other listed features include an adjustable front light for reading in different lighting conditions, plus Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and USB‑C for charging and connectivity.
Battery life should also see a meaningful improvement. The Xteink S4 is fitted with a 1,400mAh battery, more than double the 650mAh capacity found in the X4 and X3. Despite the bigger battery, it remains highly portable at 95 grams and just 6.98mm thick, making it easy to carry in a pocket or small bag.
Pricing is another attention-grabber. In China, the Xteink S4 is listed at CNY 339 (around $50 / €42). For shoppers outside China, the good news is that an international release has been reported for the coming months—so anyone looking for a compact Android e-reader with a smartphone-friendly magnetic design may soon have another budget option to consider.
