TSMC’s chip production operations in the United States are experiencing a significant surge, fueled by substantial orders from tech giants like Apple, AMD, and NVIDIA. These companies are proactively responding to the uncertainty surrounding tariffs by turning towards TSMC’s Arizona facility for their chip manufacturing needs.
The strategy to bring production back to the U.S., driven by the previous administration’s tariff policies, appears to be achieving its intended effects. Many tech firms, once viewing U.S.-sourced chips as a costly option, are now increasingly opting to secure their supplies domestically. This shift is largely attributed to concerns over potential tariff impacts on their international supply chains.
In a move to address the soaring demand and maintain equilibrium between supply and demand, TSMC has announced a substantial 30% price hike on its 4nm chip production within the U.S. The unexpected rush of orders at the Arizona facility has led to significant supply chain disruptions, as it was initially not equipped to handle such volumes. Despite a monthly wafer output capacity ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 units, the facility is finding it challenging to meet the flooding demand from tech giants.
The expansion of TSMC into the U.S. market is proving to be a timely and strategic success as companies navigate the shifting landscape of international tariffs. As the administration deliberates on new chip tariffs, there’s a heightened interest in TSMC’s U.S.-based operations, directing the industry’s focus away from Taiwan for the time being.
Interestingly, major investments are also being directed towards TSMC’s U.S. endeavors, with NVIDIA recently pledging a $500 billion investment. Meanwhile, AMD has committed to having its Turin server CPUs validated at TSMC Arizona. While this excitement seems to bypass Intel for the moment, future developments in their processes, such as the promising 18A node, might shift interest towards Intel eventually. However, for now, the spotlight remains firmly on TSMC’s booming U.S. operations.
