The iPhone 16 Pro Max is making waves in the world of filmmaking with its remarkable features that combine wide-angle, ultrawide-angle, and telephoto capabilities. Apple’s commitment to making its devices synonymous with high-quality video capture has led to its admiration by the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI). They’ve launched the initiative, MAMI Select: Shot on iPhone, giving filmmakers the chance to harness the advanced software and hardware of this flagship for producing impressive content.
This initiative features experienced filmmakers guiding four emerging talents on how to create films using the iPhone 16 Pro Max, devoid of traditional equipment. Esteemed figures in Indian cinema like Konkona Sen Sharma, Vikramaditya Motwane, Lijo Jose Pellissery, and Vetri Maaran have selected four budding filmmakers to mentor in this challenge, showing that filmmaking can thrive in the age of handheld technology. Vetri Maaran emphasized that using an iPhone for shooting allows for greater personal artistic expression and represents a democratization of filmmaking.
The initiative has already seen inspiring films like ‘Seeing Red’ and ‘Tinctoria’ come to life. Shalini Vijayakumar’s ‘Seeing Red’ uses the iPhone’s advanced lenses and capture modes to create a comedic horror film, while Amrita Bagchi’s psychological thriller ‘Tinctoria’ showcases the device’s Cinematic mode. Both projects illustrate how the iPhone’s technology helps produce stunning visual narratives, with Bagchi particularly impressed by the 4K 120FPS capability, calling the iPhone 16 Pro Max a ‘rocket machine’ for its efficiency.
Other projects, like ‘Kovarty’ by Rohin Raveendran Nair and ‘Mangya’ by Chanakya Vyas, have similarly demonstrated the device’s power to rival traditional, cumbersome cameras. This not only highlights the iPhone as a formidable tool for filmmakers but also reshapes expectations of mobile technology in creative industries.
Looking ahead, Apple plans to introduce more enhanced camera features in the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which could appeal significantly to the vlogging community. These advancements are anticipated to feature prominently in future MAMI Select initiatives, with updates promised for 2026. This forward step in mobile filmmaking could continue to redefine storytelling and visual production.
