TSMC Set to Gain Big from Apple’s C1 5G Modem Expansion to iPad and Watch Lines in 2026

Apple’s latest breakthrough with the C1 5G modem in the newly released iPhone 16e is making waves across the tech industry. This innovation marks a significant achievement for Apple as it triumphs in creating its first in-house baseband chip, stepping away from its reliance on Qualcomm. The beneficiary of this development, besides Apple, is its manufacturing ally, TSMC, which is poised to see substantial gains as the C1 modem finds its way into a variety of Apple products. There are also plans to further expand the range of in-house components produced using advanced manufacturing processes.

Excitingly, the next generation of Apple’s 5G modem, tentatively named ‘Ganymede’ or potentially the C2, is already in the pipeline. It’s anticipated to be mass-produced using TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm process, promising even greater performance and efficiency enhancements over its predecessor. The C1, using TSMC’s 4nm and 7nm technologies, already boasts remarkable battery efficiency, surpassing any previous 6.1-inch iPhone model.

The C1’s success is just the beginning of Apple’s grand plans, with the modem expected to feature in future Apple Watch and iPad models as early as 2026. As Apple tests the C2, it seems the tech giant is in high gear, intent on integrating its proprietary baseband chips across a broader range of devices.

Looking ahead, Apple could introduce ‘Prometheus,’ another potential modem iteration, possibly the C3. Reports suggest that Apple is experimenting with three different versions of these custom 5G modems, each designed to suit specific device requirements. Notably, the company aims to include mmWave technology in the C2, which would elevate it to compete directly with Qualcomm’s current standards. The absence of mmWave in the C1 likely relates to initial cost considerations that could be resolved in subsequent versions.
